I meant to post this right after the visit, but things got busy here. Dagney had her GI follow-up last Friday (1 1/2 weeks ago). At the time we had been dairy-free for 2 weeks, without any real change (not that I expected any!). First of all, I want to say how much better this visit was from the previous ones. Dagney was SUCH a good girl, she didn’t cry at all! (Last time was the most horrendous time I’ve ever had, she cried and cried and cried and sobbed so much, I don’t think they’d seen anything like it before!!) She let them weigh her (she actually stood on the little scale for them), take her height, and even take her temp and blood pressure!! She even got blood drawn–that she did cry for, but do you blame her? She calmed down very quickly, and was looking for her “boon” (I’d promised her a balloon after it!). She was really good at the previous Pedi visit too the week before for her sinusitis–I prepped her with her Elmo doctor kit, and now whenever you mention any doctors, she says “look in ears”, “listen to tummy”, no matter what type of doc it is, even if we’re going to my ob visit!
Anyway, I mentioned to the GI that our Pedi pushed us to do a dairy-free trial, which didn’t really make any difference, but that the tomatoes seem to really be a problem for her. She looked at me like I was crazy for ever giving them to her in the first place, apparently the “GERD” diet hand-out that they probably gave me at her first visit (when she was 3 months and only drinking formula!) must have said no juices, citrus, TOMATOES… Well, I didn’t know that! She said to hold off on tomatoes for the time being, but put her back on a regular diet otherwise for 2 weeks. Then take away the morning Axid dose, then wait 6 weeks and take away the 2nd axid dose, then after another 6 weeks, we can start trialing milk. By then we’ll be in for another follow-up, so we’ll go over the how-to’s of that then. She also wanted to test for allergies. I told her we were going to see an allergist next week, but they did the blood test anyway (which was good, because I never had her blood drawn at 1 year, so she added in for them to do the lead & anemia tests that they normally do at ages 1 & 2). What a relief that was, we were in the childrens clinic, so we got people who are used to dealing with little ones! So, so far so good. We’ll be taking away her morning dose of Axid on Friday–wish us luck! The big excitement of the day was just how good Dagney was, I was soooo relieved that her doctor visit terror may be behind her now! Hooray for Dagney!!May 27, 2008 at 9:01 pm #51813AnonymousInactiveDenise that is wonderful news. I am so glad that the tomatoes seem to be the culprit and not milk. How long is your allergist telling you to keep her off antihistamines before your appointment? We have an appointment but not til mid August and they said for Cooper to be off his Zyrtec for 10 days which seems really long to me… just curious what you were told. I hope things continue to go well both doctor visit wise and medication wean. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you all.

I’m hoping it’s ok for her, allergies have been so bad this season! It’s not a full 7 days technically, it’s 6 1/2 since her appt is in the morning, but i’m assuming that’s ok. The other doctor we made an appt with had said 5 days, and yours said 10, so I’m not sure why there’s such a big difference. Best of luck to you too!!
June 3, 2008 at 8:01 pm #52168AnonymousInactiveWell, we cut out the first Axid dose on Saturday, keep your fingers crossed, so far so good with that. We’re supposed to wait 6 weeks before cutting out the 2nd dose.
We also got the blood test results back in the mail today (I was expecting a call, but oh well…), and they indicated that everything looked fine, except she has a level 2 (slight) egg allergy! I would never have suspected that! I haven’t been giving her eggs since they say age 2 now, other than if eggs are in things, but I was just thinking yesterday that I could probably give her eggs soon since she’s fairly close to 2! They told me to make an appointment with an allergist, which I already did–I was supposed to take her today, but had changed the appt. waiting for the blood test results and not wanting to cut out her Zyrtec now since we’re just starting an Axid wean & these are bad pollen days–the appt is now in a couple of weeks, after she’s been off the Axid dose for about 5 weeks. Has anyone ever been told this about eggs or a “level 2” allergy? I am relieved that it didn’t show tomato, but a little confused why tomato seems to affect her so, I guess that’s just the acid.
June 3, 2008 at 8:22 pm #52171AnonymousInactiveFingers crossed for you guys. Our appointment isn’t until August and I am totally dreading being off Zyrtec for the 10 days prior and by then the pollen hopefully will be gone. I can’t wait for an update. Odd about the tomatoes, but it could just be the acid and not an allergy that is causing the reflux flare. I know whenever I eat pizza I get heartburn. Not so much with spaghetti but def with pizza and OJ.

I’m glad that dairy doesn’t seem to be an issue. We also see an allergist in July for Kaden and Aug for Landen (or is it the other way around, now I have to go look at my paper ) anyway, like you, I have high hopes that I’ll find out more from the allergist. Good luck with the rest of the axid weaning. I am so glad things are good so far!beth- our allergist said no antihistimines for 5 days prior. LOL they must all say something different. -
