laura was right, sylvia had esophageal thrush. she had had oral thrush and i had thrush on my breasts, so the gi put her on diflucan with the assumption that it was esophageal thrush (we didn’t scope to diagnose it) and sure enough, she started eating, sleeping, gaining weight after we treated her with diflucan—until she got sick, and then she quit eating and sleeping and lost weight. she chewed her food and spit it out instead of swallowing. often, after a few bites, she would totally refuse food. her tonsils were so large that they were touching when she would go to sleep. she developed obstructive sleep apnea which can cause failure to thrive, also. once her tonsils and adenoids were removed, she has done wonderfully.
i know i asked you this before, but i don’t know if you ever told me—-have they tested her for celiac disease? the swollen belly and skinny arms and legs………..
February 13, 2007 at 1:51 pm #24791AnonymousInactiveHi
I thank you all for the information and well wishes.
Christine- Quinn just had a celiac’s work up done last thursday. I should get the results by this week. I really hope they did it right… I do believe that he did. It was some blood work. The type was Prometheus Celiac PLUS. It includes both antibody and genetic tests. She’s also had a sweat test for cystic fibrosis.
She is also having a sleep study and PH probe done on the 22nd.
So, do you think I should ask her doc if perhaps she has thrush?

February 16, 2007 at 3:49 pm #25058AnonymousInactivesarah—-your doc did the really good and complete testing! we had to have ian tested through promethius because he is IgA deficient. it couldn’t hurt to ask the doc about esophageal thrush—–alot of docs think it is rare, but two of my kids have had it in their esophagus without it showing in their mouth. our ped gi said it really is not that rare, especially in people with chronic conditions (such as reflux).
February 19, 2007 at 11:54 am #25251AnonymousInactiveHey Laura and Sarah,
I was just browsing the topic and saw your posts. While I haven’t been through quite as hard of a time with my son who has severe reflux, (still working on his issues), I thought I’d share what a friend of mine just went through. Note-Im just a mom here, sharing what I’ve heard about this stuff-sorry if Im not 100% accurate, but it might give you a place to start!
Her son wasnt gaining any weight or height (at 3+ years, about 24lbs.)They had EVERY test done in the book, and finally were given a most likely diagnosis of Celiac disease, which has many of the same gastro-like sympotms of reflux, more importanty though, an inability to gain height or weight! (If youre not familiar with it, its an autoimmune disease (may explain the inability to get over Quinn’s illnesses) where the person actually has a prob. with gluten. Detectable through a blood test.
Then of course, the blood test came back negative for Celiac. After some more GI tests, They found out in the end, that he was allergic to his INHALER, and it gave him thrush and an infection in his esophasgus, and therefore he couldnt/wouldnt eat anything! He was put on a new medication, and it healed up very quickly!
Hope this helps!

February 19, 2007 at 11:57 am #25252AnonymousInactiveOops!
I missed the previous posts that already recommended checking for thrush and celiac! At least Im on the right track (looking into both for my son too).
Again, best of luck-

February 21, 2007 at 1:03 pm #25443AnonymousInactiveAh, yes. the doc is checking for celiac’s and I should get the results soon. I don’t think they found anything though because they haven’t called me yet. But I meet with GI tomorrow to get her PH probe placed. There I will have an opportunity to speak with him about it. And about her recurrent fevers and sicknesses. Maybe I can get him to scope her esophagus too.
Yes, Quinn is sick again and has been since Friday. Her fever has been around 103 for five days, and shoots up to 104.3 at night. She is not feeling very well at all and I just don’t know what to do about all her sickies. Each time she gets sick, she just takes much longer to bounce back. She’s 13 months and still not walking… which is not too concerning right now. But I took her to the doc and Quinn has not moved on the scale nor has she grown in inches. She is still 18 pounds and 29 inches long. Ugh! The doc is a little concerned about her lack of growth. When Quinn gets sick, she does not eat. If she does not eat, she does not grow. The more she is sick, the more she does not eat. Do you get where I’m going? So we need to keep an eye on that. Also he wants me to keep a daily log of her temperatures and her symptoms along with them if she has any. It’s not uncommon for a kid to have a temp with a cold or virus, but it is uncommon for a kid to have a temp with no symptoms at all. The doc said that lack of sleep can cause a kid to be FTT and get sick often. So tomorrow is our sleep study. Hopefully we can get some answers with that.
Thank you for your wisdom! It’s greatly appreciated!

February 21, 2007 at 1:16 pm #25450AnonymousInactiveGood luck with the probe and sleep study. I hope you finally get some answers.
She sure is adorable!
February 22, 2007 at 9:24 am #25521AnonymousInactiveGood luck with the tests. Please keep us posted. About the walking, Hailey didn’t even start crawling until she was 11 months! (she definitely had some motor delays, but once she started feeling a bit better she really took off. now she’s mostly on track.)
February 28, 2007 at 8:04 pm #26120AnonymousInactiveOh my, bless her little heart! How is she doing now??

March 1, 2007 at 2:45 am #26145AnonymousInactiveHi Tina-
Quinn is actually doing quite well. She had a really bad fever and bug last weekend, but that seems to have resolved. She is doing much better lately. I only hope that it will last for a little while. She already seems to be coming down with something else, but I’m hoping that it’s only a cold. She is learning how to walk now… and is actually taking many steps by herself. She can even stand up in the middle of the floor. I feel like she has really blossomed in the past week.
I spoke with the GI nurse about Quinn’s ph probe results. I told her
about Quinn already being on the medication. She said that Quinn is on
a really high dose. And I know it is maxed out for her weight. I also
told her that she was even medicated during the study. The nurse who
informed me of the Ph probe study before hand hadn’t told me that I was
to hold off on Quinn’s reflux meds for 3 days. Quinn had a dose the day
before the study. She said that that information changes everything. If
her reflux is that significant with that high of a dose, then maybe we
should check out another treatment plan. She told me that she would
forward the information over to the doctor and that he would devise
another treatment plan for her if need be. Ugh… here it goes! I’m
sure they will want to do an upper GI. She’s due for one anyways to be
sure that the reflux isn’t causing significant damage to her esophagus.
But as far as another treatment plan… I’m not sure what else they
intend to do. Her diet is already altered. She is already on a really
high dose of reglan and prevacid and has been for many months now. I’m
taking a risk because reglan can have many bad neurological side
effects if taken for long periods of time. But if she does not get
it… she usually spits up a lot. We’ll see what the doc says. I should
be getting a call tomorrow.-Sarah
March 1, 2007 at 10:13 am #26170AnonymousInactiveMaybe she’d do better on a regimen of both PPI (Prevacid) and H2 Blocker like Zantac. I think there have been a few babies on this board taking both. Or maybe she needs 30 mgs of Prevacid. What form of Prevacid is she on? If it’s the compounded version it could be losing it’s effectiveness if not prepared correctly.
I hope the doctor has some solutions when he calls tomorrow. I’ll keep Quinn in my prayers.
March 1, 2007 at 3:21 pm #26229AnonymousInactivean upper gi won’t tell you if there is any damage to her esophagus.
March 2, 2007 at 4:46 am #26326AnonymousInactiveYah… I know about the UGI. I meant the scope. My bad. I think I will try the 30 mg of prevacid. But according to what I heard from the GI doctor, her reflux is so severe that it probably won’t work. But… it’s def. worth a shot. I’ll try doing Zantac too to see if that’s effective. I heard to try carafate too. Quinn will be admitted to the hospital again due to the results of this last Ph probe. I wrote about it in the “procedures” folder. Check it out.
