I wish I would’ve found this forum 5 months ago . Anyways, I have a 5 1/2 month old. I haven’t been to a GI yet, because Doctors say its normal. And gave her Reflux meds. But at 5 1/2 months she is STILL gassy. We have her on Enfamil Nutramigen. The doctor said she is old enough and should have outgrown it , so I should try other formula. Nothing is working.. Nutramigen seems still gassy. It doesn’t matter if I feed her solid foods or not.. I’ve gone 2 weeks with no foods (STILL GASSY) , sometimes she does better when she has food.
She chokes and gags on her formula alot, and also you can hear her gas rumble in her belly.
I use Gripewater, her reflux meds, and gas drops. Sometimes a colic tea that really helps.
I have also done a TON of research on reflux and formula. Could it be the DHA that is causing this? Because my first son was on Allimentum and didnt have these problems and that was 8 1/2 years ago.

Just my personal opinion here but you may want to stop solids until you get the gas under control so you know what was causing it for sure.
Something that comes to my mind when reading this is when you say chokes and gags on the bottle does it seem like reflux? Or is it the bottle? My ds#2 choked and gagged on his bottle and had the rumbling stomach frequently. I finally figured out that different bottles made a difference. He was just taking lots of air in on some bottles and the flow of the nipple made a difference too.
If it seems like reflux then what medicine is she on and what dosage?February 25, 2009 at 9:14 am #61262AnonymousInactiveHi & Welcome! I agree w/Sarah. My DD didn’t do well on nutramigen but did really well on alimentum(we switched to elecare eventually due to allergy). Maybe try alimentum?! It’s so hard in these early stages of trying to figure everything out. Also, I wanted to suggest getting a swallow study done. It’s possible that w/the gagging/choking on bottle that there’s aspiration issues. A swallow study will help determine that and also let you know to what consistency the formula needs to be in order to prevent that.
Wanted to comment on what your Ped said about your DD should have already outgrown it, not true. Most don’t outgrow it until around a year old. So, don’t get freaked out that our LO still has reflux issues.Maybe the gripe water is adding to the gassiness?! My DD did not tolerate the gripe water at all. She was even more uncomfortable and gassy while on it. Maybe take that out and see if there’s any improvement?!As far as the DHA….uhhh, I don’t really know. BUT, I could have sworn that there wasn’t any DHA in nutramigen/alimentum. Have they changed it? lolAnd last but not least…What is the reason your LO is on nutramigen to begin w/? Is it just b/c of gassiness? Maybe there are intolerance/allergy issues going on and your LO needs to be on an elemental formula.Hopefully I haven’t confused you at all! lol Good Luck!March 5, 2009 at 8:08 pm #61444AnonymousInactiveHI Mel – waves Karen from HER
I am sorry that Skye is still having such horrible issues.March 5, 2009 at 8:10 pm #61445AnonymousInactiveAnd yes – it has DHA/ARA in it. 90 percent of formulas do now.
See my post in the misc folder about this.Karen -
