I am glad that things are going so well! Congrats!!
When we went to our 2nd opinion doctor, he prescribed a combination of compounded omeprazole and reglan. I asked “OK, what happens if THIS doesn’t work either?” (We had tried zantac with no luck and I hadn’t found this site yet to learn about PPIs/zegerid) He said there were still options and he knew several doctors at the children’s hospital in St. Louis that were prescribing Nexium for babies. I found this forum in the meantime so when compounded omeprazole didn’t work, I asked for zegerid and thankfully we haven’t had to look back. My point being…even though it’s not talked much about on here…Nexium is apparently an option! I’ll be curious to hear what your GI doc says about this as well.
GOOD LUCK!

my son was never 100% better on a high dose of PPI until we put him on neocate. a milk/soy protein intolerance in a reflux baby will prevent itself like a symptom of reflux. it actually damages the GI tract and aggrivates reflux. many babies with reflux are sensitve to these two proteins, and for many babies that switch to a hypoallergenic formula it solves any reflux flair ups that they were having. if your baby is sensitive to these two proteins, then no amount of PPI will help heal the damage in the GI tract that the offending formula is causing.
i will provide you with two links that explain what happens in the body of a baby who is sensitive to these proteins and that has reflux. please take a look, bc you may find that this is actually the case in your baby.
for this first link, scroll down to “milk intolerance” and read from there:

But, given our history and symptoms, two GIs and our pediatrician think this is not the case. I also think it’s not the case as she was doing really well on milk formula only for three months on only 15 mg of prevacid. It’s once we intro’d solids that things hit the fan. The only symptom she has on that list is reflux. And with the 30 mg, she has shown no discomfort and he stools have looked better since stopping the solids. I think we are just going to have to move slowly through food trials again. But thanks again for the info.
She took another awake bottle today. 5 oz this time and she pulled off on her own and didn’t seem uncomfortable in the least. The other two were sleepy as it was before a nap and before bed. She also took two naps in her crib today and slept through the night. Things are certainly looking up.
ETA: When I speak of eating issues, I’m talking about Gabby’s slight bottle aversion. She used to cry when she saw the bottle coming when she was undermedicated. She still seems to have apprehension with the bottle, so now I leave it on the floor empty and when she goes for it, I make the bottle. I figure she needs the control now. The other issue is volume. She’s taking 4 – 6 oz only per bottle. She only takes three bottles so it worries me. But two times a day I give her 2 oz in a sippy and 3 oz mixed in her cereal for a combined 5 oz plus cereal in each serving. I don’t know if this is a normal amount of food to take for a baby or if she should be eating more. Her intake is about 20 – 28 oz with 1/2 cup cereal per day. She’s gaining 2 oz per week these days and I’m not sure if this is normal. Any insights?

Even after he was pain free the bottle was just a necessary evil to him. He’d eat 4 ounces 4 times per day and maybe 5-6 at bedtime. But this was a huge improvement over the months he was unmedicated or under medicated. Then he would not eat more than 1-2 ounces and even that was a struggle.
Long story short….Myles gave up the bottle at 7 months of age except his nightime bottle right before bed. So, I was feeding him 6-8 ounces of breast milk or formula in his oatmeal in the morning (very runny but I felt it was necessary to get some fluid into him) and I’d add breast milk or formula to his baby food purees throught the day. He did not take a sippy cup until he was 13 months old so I had to get most of his fluid into him by spoon. I even spoon fed him 4 ounces of breast milk once per day.
As for the amounts he was getting, he went for months consuming 15-18 ounces a day, plus solids three times per day. That was enough for him and he never lost weight or failed to gain. I would just let her baby visits and weight checks be your guide to whether she is getting enough. You can ask to have her weighed more frequently if it would give you peace of mind. My clinic would do this free of charge.
I think what you are doing now by letting her have some control over the bottle is a good idea. Myles now LOVES his bedtime bottle. He starts to laugh with pure joy when he sees it at night and he runs to get his blankie so he can snuggle with mommy and drink his bottle.
April 20, 2007 at 1:39 pm #31068AnonymousInactiveIf your daugter did OK on milk based formula you might be right, but I will tell you this…three GI’s and two pediatrician did NOT think Brianna was milk/soy intolerant…and my DH and I never had problems, either as children, or as adults with either, and Brianna still did have issues. The only one on the list was reflux, and she did also wake a night (but I think that was from the reflux) Once my BM was dairy/soy free, she started sleeping much better at night. Not saying that is it with your LO, but if things don’t fully improve, could be worth a try.

I just went for Alana’s checkup and this is what happened…she is taking about 600mls on a good day (I think thats about 20 ounces) and 500mls on a bad one (this is also over three bottles). The nurse suggested that was the bare minimum for her age (Alana also does three meals and two snacks which is perhaps on the higher side). She suggested 700mls would be better. Alana will not eat anything that I mix formula into (or cereal for that matter), so there is no chance of me getting more into her. You will note perhaps from my previous posts Alana has never had any difficulty gaining (she is now 10kg and at the 90%ile) so I queried her as to why it was the bare min, what was the worry. She indicated it wasn’t so much the fluid but the minerals etc in the formula that were the issue.
I thought i would share this experience as our bubs are at a similar age.
I’ve decided not to worry about it….to busy worrying about head injuries now she thinks the tiles are the best thing to try and stand on
