fussing immediately after prevacid dose?

Hi ladies. I’m so glad I found this board. I am sorry for all of my questions, but I appreciate all of the information and support I’m getting here. I was upset earlier today over DD having reflux, and I got so many nice posts in support. You are amazing ladies, especially those of you who don’t even have a refluxer anymore but hang out to help us newbies.

DD who is now almost 8 weeks old is on 15 mg of prevacid, divided and given 2xday. I have noticed for the past few days that she screams immediately after I give her a dose. She doesn’t seem to mind the taste of the medicine. The screaming starts immediately after she swallows it. I wonder if it sets off her hunger, or maybe she is lactose intolerant and is reacting to the lactose in the prevacid? Any ideas? It’s getting hard to hold her off for 30 minutes, and sometimes the feedings don’t go well right after the dose. She goes 3 hours between feedings so I give her the dose about 2 hours after her last feeding.

hmm…I wonder if swallowing anything other than something ‘soothing’ like formula/breastmilk hurts? I wonder if she’d react the same way to tylenol or something else? were you giving zantac before the prevacid? did she react to that? are you giving any other meds other than the prevacid? because it can take up to 14 days to see it’s ‘full effects…’

I agree it is hard to hold them off. It does get a little easier, but it’s always hard to have to make my baby wait to eat. It’s even harder when you are around people who don’t know you very well or don’t know your situation. They look at you like you are the meanest mommy on the planet for starving your baby.

When my ds was smaller, he always swang while he waited. His swing has lots of lights, sounds and a mobile so it kind of distracted him a bit. Now he is bigger, he jumps in the Jumperoo while he waits. Again with the distractions. Our cable has an On Demand feature where you can choose movies to watch whenever you want. I recently discovered there is a baby section with Baby Einstein type programming on it. Most of the shows are about 5-15 minutes, so we usually see about 2. They are another great distraction.

i’m giving zantac once a day, at least 4 hours after the morning dose of prevacid. I only give her 1.5 ml of zantac, which is about half the max dose for her weight. She tolerates the zantac fine and there is no fussing, which is interesting because it tastes so bad. Yes, we are definitely seeing much improvement with prevacid yet, but it’s only been one week. But maybe the prevacid is scratchy on the way down or she’s just mad that i held it against her cheek (although she doesn’t struggle during that).

My best guess is that she doesn’t like the grainy feeling of it going down. Maybe she is just really sensitive to the texture of it since it is not a smooth consistencly.

I bet she will learn to adjust to it soon.

I was going to guess that it might be a texture thing as well. Since she is so young she really has only had the sensation of liquids so maybe the grainy consistency is throwing her off. Have you tried to dissolve it in alittle water and use a mylicon type dropper to draw it up and then squirt it in that way?? Maybe worth a shot just to see if that makes any difference. Just a thought.

Hi there. How interesting that I read your post today…. We have been fighting a battle with diarrhea and mucousy stools since birth with my 3 month old MSPI baby. Today was the first day I have EVER, in almost 4 months, seen anything thicker than finger paint consistency come out of my baby’s cute little bum. Why does this pertain to you? We took him off Prevacid yesterday. He reacted the EXACT same way when we first started giving him the Previcid. Within 5 minutes of taking the Previcid, he would get REALLY uncomfortable. At first I thought it was because he was hungry, but then after fussing and burping for 30 minutes or so, he would go to sleep. Many times, he would then have little interest in eating. I am positive his was more than an irritation from the granules. It actually hurt his tummy somehow. I would tell people how weird it was, but after about a week or so of this it stopped and he seemed to do okay with it. I didn’t think it could be a contributing cause to the GI issues. Now I really believe otherwise. I don’t think it is a coincidence that he stopped it yesterday and had his first normal poop ever today. He was diagnosed with C-Diff about the same time he started the Prevacid, which was likely the initial cause of the mucous etc. But, after treating the C-Diff (4 times) he still had diarrhea and mucous. I am now thinking the Previcid is the reason it didn’t go away. I am REALLY curious to see if you noticed any diarrhea or mucous? How long has your baby been on the Previcid? Does she get any other kind of milk through formula or your diet if you BF? Please keep me updated and I will do the same.

Bottom line–my DD is not having mucous or diahreah (sp?) with the prevacid. Here is her story so we can compare:

DD showed signs of reflux on first day of her life. I don’t breastfeed. For the first 4 weeks of her life, she was severely constipated to the point we took her to the ER where they diagnosed a fissure in her anus (a tear from straining so hard with constipation). We switched to Nutramigen which is liquid gold and within 24 hours the constipation was GONE. However, the Nutramigen has definitely caused very loose stools. Her stools are now very seedy as well, but I would not call it diahreah.

Shortly after the constipation was cleared up, I noticed her other symptoms did not go away. I thought all of her crying was due to constipation and had never considered reflux. A friend told me that my DD had all the classic signs of reflux, and she was right. We started DD on zantac which worked wonders for a few weeks and then stopped working.

DD has been on Prevacid for one week exactly now. She’s cried with every dose but I have noticed over the past two days it is subsiding, just like your DS’s subsided. She’s on 15 mg a day divided into two doses. Prevacid is working for her, but I agree with you that it causes GI issues. She seemed to have more gas and fussing on the prevacid (and she is still getting zantac until next week so it’s not the reflux symptoms). But it did not cause the diarrhea and mucous like it did in your DS. I agree with you that it is probably not coincidence that your DS finally had a normal poop right after stopping prevacid.

What is C-Diff and MSPI?

How is DS doing today? Did he have more normal poops? What medicine is he on now for the reflux?

C-Diff is a nasty bacterial infection of the intestines. It causes diarrhea and mucous. MSPI is milk/soy protein intolerance. We actually just got another round of tests back. He tested + for C-DIff again! He still is having yucky diapers about every other one I change. I am sure the Prevacid made it worse, but the C-Diff still there so the yucky diapers won’t go away until it does. There is a correlation between PPI’s H2Blockers and C-Diff infections, so I have taken him completely off any meds and am trying to combat the C-Diff with a probiotic.

As for your case. The fact that Nutramigen helped your baby could be an indication of MSPI. Sometimes MSPI manifests in diarrhea, sometimes in constipation (my first 2 are also MSPI and VERY constipated.) MSPI is no big deal, almost all babies grow out of it by a year or so. But, there is Lactose from milk in Prevacid, which could be what is bugging her tummy. Hopefully not, because Prevacid works REALLY well for reflux. However, I just emailed Marci-Kids and they stated the best reflux meds for MSPI babies is the Zegerid, 40 mg packets.

Chris, I know this is an old post but I thought I’d try and reply to it. My daughter is on prevacid and is also a MSPI child. She’s almost 4 months old and seems to be struggling with prevacid. I’ve recently found that prevacid solutabs have lactose in them. I’m wondering if you noticed this and if you have wondered if that could be an issue. Thanks!
