Don’t let your doctor second guess yourself! YOU live with Amanda and you know the pain she is in. We believed our ped for far too long before I finally found this website and fought for what I knew was best. It made all the difference.
I think it’s great that you are starting Prevacid. Just remember that if it doesn’t seem to be helping it is probably because she needs a higher dose. It doesn’t mean that it WON’T work…you just have to fight for the appropriate dose. The only “mechanics” that a PPI affects in the body are the acid producing cells. That is what you WANT to control so that she is not in pain any more.
It is so frustrating to me when doctors are not educated about reflux and the proper treatments. The damage that could happen to her esophagus, to me, is far worse that trialing prevacid at a correct dose!
Another thing (not to scare you)…even some ped GI doctors are fairly stupid (pardon my term!) when it comes to reflux. You would THINK that they would have a better understanding but I know some moms have hit brick walls even with the GI. I just didn’t want you to assume the GI would be your saviour because he/she might be just as uninformed. Hopefully NOT…but just be prepared for anything!
Do what you feel is best for Amanda. We had to switch doctors before we found someone who would listen!
