My DD is 2 and has recently over the past few months developed eczema and had an anaphylactic reaction to egg. We have been completely egg free for awhile and the ezcema was almost gone, but now is back again, although not as bad as before, its still bothersome(itching in a few spots until they bleed, but not covering major body parts anymore). Our ped doesn’t think that allergy testing is warranted at this point because we were able to pinpoint egg and saw improvement with elimination. She feels like it would cause more trauma and wouldn’t necessarily detect anything new or confirm anything as well. I haven’t inroduced anything new since, we use free and clear everything, and try to keep note of things that she has eaten that correlate to worsening eczema, but can’t find the “culprit”. She also goes from constipation to very loose stools in a matter of 12 hours which makes me think food, but who knows. Hydrocortisone seems to help some, but I feel like we use it way too much which can cause issues as well. My questions are do you thing allergy testing would be beneficial at this point or could she just have plain eczema that’s not food related meaning this is just going to be like this no matter what we do?
April 14, 2009 at 4:28 pm #62084AnonymousInactiveJust a little note about eczema treatment. I recently bought some ‘Norwex’ clothes to help clear up eczema with my brother in law. He has bad eczema in his elbows. It cleared it up within a couple days and took the itch out. These cloths have silver in them. You use nothing but these cloths and water! They have a website http://www.norwex.com Just incase you wanted to try something with no side effects.
April 14, 2009 at 8:02 pm #62090hellbenntKeymasterI don’t know how traumatic allergy testing is? from all I’ve read by mothers here, they all were glad they had it done…I *think* that by age 2 the testing is accurate? if you go to a ped allergist who does skin pricks all.the.time then they would know how to keep toddler distracted, etc, while testing is going on…you *could* ‘just’ try eliminating various things, but that might make you nuts? I think if it were me (& it’s not me, it’s you!) I would go for some tests to rule everything out.
it’s hard. and, what do I know? ack.April 16, 2009 at 1:29 pm #62136AnonymousInactiveHi There! We actually just did skin prick testing w/my 3yo 2 weeks ago. I wouldn’t say it was traumatic at all. The thing is this…IF they are allergic, then the spots where the offending food was pricked could become very itchy. Also, the main prick(god, I can’t for the life of me think of what it’s referred to, but it’s the one that has to react in order to make sure the rest of the test is accurate) will flare up and become very very itchy and NOTHING can touch their back for 15min. My little guy was distracted w/a lollipop though so I’d bring a few w/u. :):) Anyways, I just wanted to let you know that it’s not that bad, and your Ped should refer you for testing if you ask for it. Good Luck & please keep us updated!

Also, we will be doing skin prick allergy testing w/ my (just turned) 3 yr old in the next month or so. From what I’ve read, heard & discussed w/ my ped I agree w/ what everyone else has said re: trauma, accuracy , etc.
Good Luck!
