WE are taking my ds to the gi specialist for his first visit on Friday. What should we expect? He has reflux and has been having a hard time eating beginning 2 weeks ago and is now refusing everything. he is on prevacid 7.5mg a day.
Thanks

Our first visit with the ped GI occurred after Kaelyn was admitted to the hospital because she was turning blue when she spit up. Kaelyn was in the hospital for 5 days, so she checked on Kaelyn every day of her hospital stay. So, I know our situation is not the norm. She asked a lot of questions about Kaelyn’s eating habits and her reflux behaviors. Every day she increased Kaelyn’s zantac and reglan doses to see if that would make a difference. The first day she switched her from Alimentum to Nutramigen. She also ordered an upper GI which showed that Kaelyn was refluxing almost constantly (it doesn’t always show reflux, but it does rule out other issues). We left the hospital with Kaelyn on the max dose for zantac and with a follow up appt for 4 weeks later. At the follow up, she determined that the zantac wasn’t enough and we switched to prevacid.

Babies metaboilze these drugs much faster than adults – once a day is
NOT enough.I’d also ask about MSPI – what formula is he on?
March 29, 2006 at 9:50 am #4884AnonymousInactiveHe is currently on Enfamil Prosobee. We tried him on Alimentum but he spit up violently the entire day on it. He was doing awesome on the prevacid until the 17th of March and then things have just been going downhill since.
March 29, 2006 at 9:54 am #4886AnonymousInactiveSo he’s on soy? I’d speak with the GI doc about that – soy proteins can
build up in the system (just like milk proteins) and cause problems –
and many babies who have milk issues have soy issues.I’d focus on that and a Prevacid increase – see if he can even do 7.5
2xday and take it from there – with room to increase to 15 in the
morning and 7.5 at night if needed.Good luck on Friday!
March 29, 2006 at 9:58 am #4887AnonymousInactiveThanks. Will the ped gi also be able to answer questions about the milk/soy proteins. I am definitely going to push for the med increase.
March 29, 2006 at 5:25 pm #4934hellbenntKeymasterThe ped gi should be able to help with milk/soy protein intolerance and milk/soy protein allergies. I’d read up on it so you can tell her/him about it, just in case
web site that gives the best explanation of food allergies/intolerance and its relation to reflux that I have found to date. http://www.disa.com.au/ go on the left to the menu & click on “Food Intolerant Allergic Baby”
