Hello mommies! Ive been lurking on this site for 3 wks now and have finally decided to join. 4 wks ago my now 11 wk old baby boy was rxd Pepcid by his pedia because of silent reflux, he was also on Nutramigen at this time. He improved for a week but was back to archingl/grunting again. We saw a ped GI, and changed his Pepcid to Prevacid solutabs 7.5 mg twice a day and elecare due to blood in his stool. Tomorrow will be two weeks on both, like the pepcid and nutramigen, he did wonderful on the solutab and elecare, i thought we got it but he has been refluxing again since yesterday, if not for mylanta i dont think he’ll be able to eat. Not only that he has since developed rashes on his neck. Ive read here that it may take 1 month for the bad stuff to leave his body but he has done so well the past couple of days already, why did he only get worse yesterday? Is he allergic to elecare (rashes on the neck) ? Should i wait two more weeks and just ask GI tomorrow to maybe increase his solutabs? I will welcome all your input…im just sooo frustrated everytime i see my baby screaming in pain 🙁
March 25, 2013 at 8:03 am #71869hellbenntKeymastertry switching to neocate? same as elecare, just different brand; sometimes people do better with one brand over another…
as for the solutabs, I would read all about dosing and if a proper dose doesn’t help, and if the rash doesn’t go away (after 2 weeks on neocate), then I’d switch away from the solutabs.
also: the solutabs need to be given on an empty stomach, followed by a ‘meal’ 30 minutes after.
Prevacid 101:
scroll to the last page of this post, (it’s actually also about other PPIs like prilosec, too)

March 25, 2013 at 1:44 pm #71870AnonymousInactiveThank you Laura. I do try to adhere to the Prevacid dosing but its hard because sometimes he doesnt want to eat yet or sometimes i feel like his tummy is never empty (if thats possible). Anyways, I just emailed his GI so Ill wait to see what she says about the switching formula or wait til our appointment with her next week.
March 25, 2013 at 3:00 pm #71874hellbenntKeymastersometimes you have to TELL your dr, not ask
also, be sure to read the link I gave you and, from prevacid 101, look for the dosing chart – check your baby’s dose- I bet it can be increased…
TELL dr you need new rx for zantac, don’t ask. TELL.
FAX FAX FAX the dr (or email! lol)
don’t wait for a call…
start off with a THANK YOU
keep it short & sweet
stick to the FACTS (no emotions and ramblings)
state current meds, doses & symptoms
make request- flat out- short & sweet
provide pharmacist name & contact info
THANK AGAIN
follow up by calling office to tell them fax was sent
call again later to discuss requests made in fax, ie:
is RX called in yet?
THANK YOU

March 25, 2013 at 10:37 pm #71886AnonymousInactiveGI wants to switch him to Nexium 10 mg twice a day, I will pick up samples tomorrow. I assume it also needs to be given on empty stomsch, 30 mins before next meal?
March 26, 2013 at 11:18 am #71889AnonymousInactiveMy children suffered badly from reflux and digestive problems and the thing that we found to help them the most is a supplement of digestive enzymes and probiotics. The enzymes make it so they can break their food down easier and so therefor their food doesn’t sit in their stomach too long and cause bloating and gas. The stomach can make too much acid trying to break down the food and this can cause painful reflux. Probiotics are what coat and protect our entire digestive tract and often times babies in general are low on them and for sure if they have digestive problems.
Please take a look at my blog to learn more details.
March 26, 2013 at 11:22 am #71890hellbenntKeymasteryes, on empty stomach, followed by a ‘meal’ 30 minutes later- how much
does he weigh? have you taken a look at Prevacid 101 (has other med doses there, nexium, too)?
March 26, 2013 at 1:12 pm #71895AnonymousInactiveThank you Martha, Joab is on culterelle once a day. Havent really noticed anything yet, but ill continue giving it to him.
Thank you Laura for all ur help. Do u have any experience with Zegerid? I want to switch him to this because when i go back to work i dont think my MIL can stick to the 30 minute rule…he is 14 lbs btw
We have an appt tomorrow
March 26, 2013 at 2:48 pm #71898hellbenntKeymasterI don’t have any experience w/ zegerid…
I ‘know’ one of the team members who created it & I trust everything they say/create, etc…
I know there can be issues w/ gas when using it, I think that’s why it’s recommended to get the rx for the 40mg packets- just TELL dr to humour you – if you have to (I’m not a medical professional! you must make your own decisions!), tell dr you will throw out what’s not used, but that you know the 40mg packets are better, blah blah. read all you can & you’ll know what to tell your dr…
March 27, 2013 at 2:49 am #71900AnonymousInactiveCulterelle has only one strain of probiotics in it. I have not heard of many people that it has helped. When we are low on probiotics then we are low on many, not just one kind. I would suggest using a kind that has at least 10 different strains in it. Also, you might want to try digestive enzymes.
Beings your little one has to be on formulas like Nutramigen and Elecare, then that is highly likely because he doesn’t make enough enzymes to properly break down the proteins. Nutramigen has the proteins extensively broken down and the Elecare has them broken down even further. When a baby doesn’t make enough enzymes then they can’t tolerate regular formula due to the proteins being too big for them to break down. Thus why these other formulas are easier for them to break down/digest.
I am not saying that digestive enzymes and probiotics are the cure all but I do believe that almost every one with any kind of digestive problems will benefit to some degree from taking a supplement of them.
We use “Digestive Health” sold by Core Health Products. They contain 13 strains of probiotics and over 20 types of digestive enzymes.
If you decide to try these or a different product containing lots of probiotics and enzymes be aware that they can cause temporary side effects. This is a good thing as it means that the body is ridding itself of bad bacteria and undigested food.
