I put Emma on Prevacid 7.5 mg 3 times a day instead of the 15 mg once a day the doctor said (I know shame on me) and the past 2 days, she has been almost like a normal baby – with the exception of the purple spitup stuff that freaked us all out there the other night.
Yesterday she was so happy and smiling, slept good with naps and two nights in a row has actually slept 6 hours straight instead of the usual 3-4. Only 1 or 2 crying fits a day for 2 days now (this is good!)and is actually easily consolled for a change. She has hardly pulled away from the bottle or cried when she is eating. Yesterday every time I gave her a bottle, she ate it without a fuss every time and acted very happy!
I notice the worst time for her as far as eating goes is in the early (4-5 a.m.) morning after she has been all night without the Prevacid. I am assuming the medicine has all worn off by then.
Now I have to go to the doctor and tell him I illegally upped her dose and it has so far seemed to work. It’s amazing what a difference 3 times a day has seemed to have made as compared to the once a day!
It’s been so nice to get her in the morning and she is laying there smiling at the ceiling fan instead of screaming!!!
August 25, 2006 at 8:51 am #12257AnonymousInactiveI’m so glad she’s feeling better and hope the doctor will now listen to you
about her med dose!
August 25, 2006 at 9:12 am #12259AnonymousInactiveThat’s great news! I hope that your doc will up her dose.

Good luck with getting her a prescription.
August 25, 2006 at 2:20 pm #12304AnonymousInactiveWhen we did something similar, I went to the doctor and played dumb. I said that two days in a row my dh and I had both given her the morning dose and that she’d seemed so much better that we’d decided to try it for a few more days with the doses spread out. Then I shared the marci kids dosing info (saying that I’d looked it up after we accidentally overdosed her). It’s not honest, but it really helped her feel better so it seemed worth it.
August 25, 2006 at 8:12 pm #12339AnonymousInactiveWell, I am totally surprised! I went to the doctor prepared for a lot of resistance about everything. He came in and asked about her reflux and I told him we tried the 15 mg once a day, didn’t work. Told him I tried 7.5 mg twice a day and that worked okay but she was miserable at night. So then I told him that I gave her a third dose in the evening and waited for him to say something bad about it. He turned around and said, you could actually give her more if she needs it! I about fell over. He then gave me 2 months of samples of 30 mg Prevacid and told me I could dose her the 7.5 three times a day or break it up further and give it to her 4 times a day. I was speachless. I told him about the Marci-Kids website and he said he didn’t know about that but he worked with the doctors at the University in Iowa City and that was where he got his information.
So then we talked about the shots and he was fine with spreading them out. She got her rotavirus which is oral and one shot today and we go back in a month, etc. She threw a nice little hissy fit in the office for him too just so he could see first hand how she could be, spit up on everything, and got the hiccups. She has kind of had a bad day today since she spit up the one dose of Prevacid and I never re-dosed her. So she didn’t have any Prevacid until noon.
Anyway, he told me he could call in a prescription or just keep giving me the samples of Prevacid and to let him know which dosing way worked best. Walked out of the office with my mouth hanging open..lol
I don’t know about the 4 times a day. He gave me 30 mg tablets and said I could break them into 4 pieces – not sure about that. Don’t really know how to go about that or if that would work well or if I should just stick with 7.5 mg 3 times a day. Either way, it turned out to be a good visit and he is very willing to work with me on getting her straightened out!
August 25, 2006 at 8:46 pm #12343AnonymousInactiveYippee!! I’m so glad to hear the good news!!. And free samples, too!!
I’m glad he was ok with spreading out her shots, too. Sounds like a great visit; other than the hissy fit, spit up, and hiccups.
I didn’t know they had a rotavirus vaccine. I’ll have to ask about that one.
I hope your little angel does well on the higher dose of Prevacid. It was the miracle cure for my little guy.
