First, let me say that I am glad to be back online. My husband downloaded a virus that had our computer not working for the past while.
All is good in the computer dept now though………..so I am back!Well, Kaden is doing quite well reflux wise. He is now down to Ranitidine, 1.5mls twice a day, and on a regular milk based formula. Yay!!!!! He has some days where his reflux acts up here and there, but for the most part, he’s pretty good. And we are glad. Here’s my thing. I have OAS (oral allergy syndrome-am anaphylactic to most of my allergens). My 8 year old has a severe egg allergy and asthma. Kaden had what I thought, was a few small patches of eczema on the back of his legs about a month or so ago. It has progressively gotten worse, and is now (I only noticed how bad it’s gotten tonight) it is quite bad on the back of his legs. Also has a large patch on his bottem (the cheek, it’s not a diaper rash), and at his diaper line (basically all across his lower back). It is so dry and red and patchy. And again, I am assuming it’s eczema, but will make him an appt to get it looked at. Then, my mother in law and I were talking about his solids he’s eating. What if this is a reaction being caused by an allergy or an intolerance? I mean, it does run in the family.
I can’t pin point any particular food, but can tell you exactly what he’s eaten. He is on a milk based formula. Can you all of a sudden start reacting to this after having had it for awhile? Wouldn’t the rash be in more places than his? He’s had rice cereal, oatmeal cereal, Milupa oatmeal and apple cereal. We only use Beech Nut foods and he’s had applesauce, pears, peaches, banana’s, blueberries, fruit salad. Carrots, peas, squash, sweet potatoes. Beech nut peaches and banana and oatmeal jarred food. The only new one that he’s had in the past few days (and the rash was there before, only it is getting worse now) is blueberries/apples.I’ve started using ivory snow for his laundry, and when he has a bath I do not use any soap or shampoo. We were using baby aveeno but it is not doing anything so I’ve been putting pure shea butter on him.Any ideas? I had actually thought maybe it was ringworm, as one of the patches has almost a circular shape, but when I looked online at ringworm, it doesn’t look the same. My guess is, that is is eczema.Anyhow, I am going to call the Dr in the am to get an appt next week. Thanks, hope everyone is doing well.November 14, 2008 at 9:58 am #58693AnonymousInactiveI’m no expert but my first thought to try & figure out what the culprit is it to do a form of an “elimination” diet for him. Just give him 2-3 low allergen foods until the excema clears (maybe pears, squash & sweet potatoes). Then, after the rash clears completely add in foods again 1 @ a time w/ 4-5 days between – obviously noting any skin/rash changes.

November 14, 2008 at 10:25 am #58696AnonymousInactiveIt’s probably nummular eczema(it can resemble ringworm). My DD broke out in nummular eczema when she first switched to elecare. It took a little while to clear up, she gets it still from time to time. BUT If he has it as much as you’re saying it’s very possible (given the family history) that he is reacting to something in his diet. I’d do like erin suggested and do a from of TED w/him until you can figure it out. Also, make an appt. just to dbl check w/the Ped.
Have you tried Dreft for his laundry? I still use it w/my 2yr old b/c he had really bad eczema up until he reached 2. Anyways, Good Luck!November 14, 2008 at 10:30 am #58697AnonymousInactiveIs Dreft available in Canada? If you would be so kind as to look at the box/bottle that you have of it (if you still have it) for a phone #, I will call them and ask where I can purchase it.
I am also going to look into that type of exzema, I’ve looked at ringworm on the internet and it doesn’t seem like it to me. And given the history of food allergies, well……………….that is most likely the cause.I am going to go through his baby food today and pick out the blandest ones we have. I also have a small stach of sweet potato puree in the freezer (that I did myself) so can start with that. Maybe I’ll make his food for the next little while, so I know what’s in them. Chicken, sweet potato etc.I am also going to make a Dr’s appt for next week if they can fit him in……….Any suggestions as to what I can put on his skin in the meantime? I do not want to use hydrocortizone on such a large area………….November 14, 2008 at 11:52 am #58703AnonymousInactiveI’m not sure if Dreft is available in Canada, but here is the # for Dreft~1-800-436-2229. Also, we use Ultra Downy Free & Sensitive for fabric softener (1-800-688-7638). This is really gentle and I haven’t had any problems w/my kids having irritated skin.
Yeah, Beechnut is pretty good about not having any x’tras in their foods, but to be on the safe side making his food is probably best(atleast until you determine the offender). You might be interested in Happy Baby fresh frozen organic baby foods. I just bought some of these the other day and my DD has taken to them quite nicely. They can be hard to find though, so I’ll attach a link just in case your interested. http://www.happybabyfood.com/PeasCarrots.htmlAs far as the hydrocortisone cream goes, I always used a VERY small amount on the patches to clear it up. I have been told to use aquaphor and/or eucerin cream, which of both I’ve used, but hydrocortisone has worked the best. It’s okay to use in moderation, just make sure it’s the 1% cream, no higher for infants/children. Aquaphor is a lot like a vaseline almost and eucerin is a really good lotion. Maybe once you get it cleard up w/the hydrocortisone, then daily use the aquaphor/eucerin.Good Luck!!! Let me know if you have any questions. -
