Aidan has developed an annoying little case of exzema on his little cheeks. poor kid. Anyone know of a good way to get rid of it??? Aveeno doesn’t do crap, he had it last winter, same thing little red scaley circles on his cheeks…..not much worked except the seasons changeing!!!! I would LOVE ANY ideas on what to use, natural things, etc. I don’t think it’s really a diet thing as it happened before he was even on solids and went away when winter was over, I think it’s more of a dry cold weather thing…..His 12 month pictures are coming up soon and I would love for his cheeks to be clear!! (although they’ll photoshop the exzema out for me if I ask)…..

I have used it on Justice and it seemed to help. Also, make sure you are washing him with Aveeno or something like that and slathering him with lotion. Of course, you have probably already been doing that. I would also say to go to a natural store and ask them what they would suggest.

Unpatroleum…
I don’t know if this helps eczema though…
November 24, 2006 at 8:20 pm #18891AnonymousInactiveJill, our three of my children get eczema and frequently on their cheeks in winter. Our family doc recommends Cortaid 1% Ointment (not lotion). A thin layer twice daily for three days is what she says to use. It does contain cortizone and it is absorbed by the skin, so it should not be used regularily or on a long term basis, but it’s certainly safe for short term use. Ask his doctor first, but I thought I’d pass that along since it works so well for us and it is available OTC.
One an outbreak clears up we use daily moisterizing to prevent another outbreak. A little vaseline or Bag Balm on the cheeks before leaving the house really helps. Laura’s suggestion would probably be great….I’ll have to check that out. My doc says any lotion that does not contain alcohol (which is hard to find believe it or not) is fine.
I hope his cute little cheeks clear up in time for his pictures.
November 24, 2006 at 8:31 pm #18893AnonymousInactiveWe had to stop using aveeno b/c we found that it made it worse. We use plain dove soap (unscented) and aquaphor ointment (it is a little pricey but is well worth the money). For an outbreak we do the same as Christine with the Cortaid. Hope that helps!
November 24, 2006 at 9:16 pm #18898AnonymousInactiveWe use Aquaphor too and it has worked like a charm. …I rub it on especially at night as when Brianna moves around in the bed, that is when she is most apt to irritate her skin. Good luck!
November 24, 2006 at 10:35 pm #18904AnonymousInactiveWe use almond oil… we buy it in Spain but we started using it for Matthew with his tube on his face and all the redness and dryness from the tape and it is wonderful… may work for exzema
November 24, 2006 at 11:19 pm #18906AnonymousInactivevery cool ty ty ty!!! I think my sister told me she used cortaid (or something similar) I’m going to check that and the aquaphor out. It’s not too bad yet but I think he’s been rubbing at it when he sleeps!!! I have a huge tub of cetaphil cream that I used last winter, didn’t get RID of the eczema, but did help a bit.
Shelby-what foods cause Justics’s eczema to act up? Just wondering, maybe a slight diet change would help too.
November 25, 2006 at 9:04 am #18919AnonymousInactiveI can’t do anything that comes from a cow. No dairy and no beef. As long as I stay away from those two things he is fine as far as exzema. Funny enough I never realized I was as intolerant or allergic to them as well. I was sick to my stomach all the time, but just never knew why. I also have very mild reflux and as long as I stay away from all cow I seem to do fine.
November 25, 2006 at 9:49 am #18923AnonymousInactiveJill, that reminds me….I have to use free and clear laundry soaps, too. If I don’t they often get an outbreak from their cheeks rubbing against their sheets and pillowcases.
Thais, the almond oil sounds great. I’ll have to check and see if we can get it here.
November 25, 2006 at 12:23 pm #18942AnonymousInactiveok no cows..funny Aidan likes cows I did give him a bit of milk yesterday and that’s when it flared up, but he’s always been on milk based formula, eaten yogurt and cheese and never had an issue?…how annoying..he’s suposed to be on whole milk in 2 weeks…..ugh then again like I’ve said before, Austin NEVER drank whole milk (or any milk for that matter) and is just fine, I don’t get the issue with them and milk. I just gave Aus poly vi sol and then flinstones when he was 2.
Good call o nthe laundry soap Christine, I didn’t even think of that. He looked MUCH better this morning after I used the aveeno creamy wash and the cetaphil cream on it last night (funny because the aveeno didn’t do crap last year!)
November 25, 2006 at 8:59 pm #18972AnonymousInactiveYou know it’s funny with milk around here, too. My girls were very sensitive to dairy early on so I avoided dairy while nursing and supplemented with soy. Eventually they were both on milk formula and did fine but both of them reacted initially when I started whole milk. They both had flare ups of eczema, but it was minor so I kept them on milk and they eventually adapted to it. Now they only seem to get eczema from things like cold weather, wind, and soaps.
Now Myles has done well on Good Start for months and since trialing whole milk with him for the last few months I’ve noticed that he gets diaper rashes. He never did before, so I’m pretty sure it’s from the milk. Maybe it just takes some time for them to adjust to whole milk if they are a little sensitive but not actually MSPI. What do you think?
Anyway, I’m glad his rash is looking better.
November 25, 2006 at 11:30 pm #18979AnonymousInactivehmm, it did look better this morning (worse as the day went on of course), I’m thinking that it really might be from the milk, and it I think I’ll be in your boat Christine, it’s not really THAT bad, just red and scaley but only in 3 spots and it gets much better after putting lotion on…guess I’ll have to ait til he’s totally on whole milk to be able to REALLY tell.
Did you switch Myles over all at one time, or mix it into his formula slowyl until it was all milk?
November 26, 2006 at 9:47 am #18988AnonymousInactiveI started a few weeks ago with 2 ounces of milk per day. All seemed well for those two weeks, but about a week ago I started increasing to 4 or 5 ounces per day and that’s when the diaper rashes started. He’s never been prone to diaper rashes, and nothing else has changed in his diet, so I’m assuming it’s the milk.
For Aidan what I’d probably do is get some Cortaid to try to get rid of it completely. Once it’s gone see if you can keep it at bay with daily moisterizing. That’s what I did with my girls, though they were older than Aidan when I put them on whole milk (about 15 months).
I’m not sure what to do with Myles at this point. The rashes go away if I keep enough desitin on him, so it’s not a severe problem, but every time he poops he gets a rash, even though I change him immediately. I guess I’ll just keep giving him milk but I probably will not switch him to milk completely for another month or so. He’s still on good start for his bedtime bottle and I’ll stick with that for a while longer.
