(I also posted this in the procedures section)
Can any of you tell me what your experiences were with endoscopies? My 3 1/2 month old DD is scheduled for one on thursday and i’m just terrified because she has to receive general anesthesia.
Did your child experience any pain after the procedure? Sore throat, etc?
Any side effects/problems with anesthesia?
What was your child like as he/she came out from under the anesthesia?
Any other advice, questions i should ask before she goes in???
thanks everyone!

My son has had 2 endos and he’s only 8 months old. One at 4 and 1/2 months and one just recently. I think age has alot to do with how they deal with it. Also, the type of anesthesia. First time, it was by iv. Second, by mask. I thought the mask was 1000 x better because it also puffs out their little veins and makes an iv easier (they have to have one to stay hydrated). Plus alot faster. But if your son is spitting up alot then they won’t do it. Ian had a sore throat both times and wouldn’t eat much for a day or two. Also, on the second one, lots of coughing and gas from breathing tube. As for immediately after-just groggy and grumpy (can’t blame him). Within 2 days he was playful and seemed fine on both.
Please don’t worry-I think they’re the best thing if you’re concerned. I’ve said this a 1000 times on the board but my son was acting fine except for his stopping taking bottles when he was a little over 4 months. Just looked like he was constipated and on high dose of prevacid too. We scheduled an endo and while waiting the week for the appt to come, we found him in vomit drenched with blood in his crib. He had many ulcers from reflux. I don’t want to scare you but if you’re heart told you to schedule one, then I think you should go with it. My heart told me to do this last one and everything came back normal and negative. But it still made me feel better and I was able to relax and not worry about every little thing for awhile.
Good luck! I feel for you. I know it’s a really hard thing to do but remind yourself that you just want your little one to feel better. Do you feel good about your doctor and the hospital? That makes a difference too!

I’m mostly worried about negative effects of anesthesia…I think she will be given the mask first to put her into a light sleep and then she will be given an IV with general anesthesia in it. I just couldn’t bear it if anything happened to her…especially during what should be a fairly quick and simple procedure….

I was worried too, still am when I think about it, but I think it’s normal to be concerned b/c they’re our babies. But I do think that it’s the only real way to get answers if you need them. Also, LOTS of people on this board have had them done and their babies have been fine, which I find to be somewhat comforting. Again, best of luck to you and your little one.
