Has anyone had any experience with Elecare vs. Neocate? I’m wondering how they each compare in regards to digestion issues as well as the reflux. My son isn’t doing well on Neocate, but I’m leary to switch formula AGIAN, especially when I’ve heard almost everyone does better on Neocate.
April 2, 2008 at 10:28 am #49747hellbenntKeymasterhas your son been on neocate only? no thickening with cereal?
how long on neocate? at least 2 or 3 weeks?how about medications?a proper dose of PPI?April 2, 2008 at 12:16 pm #49753AnonymousInactiveYa, just the Neocate…no cereal. This will be day 8. The GI Doc is telling me to switch already to the Elecare because his stools are still mucousy and because his other symptoms have worsened since starting the Neocate? I’m not sure how much of that is really just a coincidence due to his age. I have heard that reflux usually peeks at 4-6 weeks. Is this correct? Also, it is my understanding that the large majority of babies do better on Neocate?

Just wanted to share our experience with starting Neocate. Landen’s reflux appeared to get worse at first. We were using Alimentum RTF which is kind of thick and then switched him to Neocate which is really thin. Because it is so thin, he started spitting up (and he was a silent refluxer) and I thought he was getting worse. We stuck it out though and in a couple weeks his blood/mucous had all cleared out which resulted in a MAJOR improvement to his reflux. The neocate will do it’s job, it just needs time to work. If he’s REALLY bad you could look into corn allergy though.HTH!!April 3, 2008 at 2:15 pm #49825AnonymousInactiveNeocate has corn in it? Does Elecare?
April 3, 2008 at 5:22 pm #49839hellbenntKeymasterI’m pretty sure they both do? You could look at their websites
neocate: yes: http://www.neocate.com/aaa_neocate/683-neocate-infant-ingredients.html
elecare: yes: http://elecare.com/HCP/product_info.aspx?s=1
I wouldn’t ‘jujmp the gun’ so to speak…
I’d give the neocate a good 2 or even 3 weeks…HARD!
Allergic to corn- ie no neocate: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=9319&PID=81148#81148
April 3, 2008 at 10:44 pm #49851AnonymousInactiveJust looked at my Elecare- yep, it does have corn in it as Corn Syrup Solids. Sorry! Give it some time so the yucky proteins can vacate the building, so to speak.
Good luck!April 5, 2008 at 11:10 am #49920AnonymousInactiveHi, I’m curious why you use Elecare vs Neocate?
April 5, 2008 at 12:18 pm #49922AnonymousInactiveWe did neocate and it took a month to get “on track”– Also my son wasn’t medicated properly with a PPI dose. I would be hesitant to switch so soon.
April 5, 2008 at 1:33 pm #49925AnonymousInactiveWe used Elecare b/c that’s what the GI’s office had at the time, they were out of Neocate. I like it b/c the mixing ratio is like regular formula; 1 scoop powder to 2 ounces water. I know Neocate is 1 to 1.
I would, however, be hesistant to switch if I were you. With the Elecare, we saw some small improvement right away. But, it took about 2 weeks for the dramatic improvement. Funny how everything takes 2 weeks, huh?My GI and I were talking at our appt. yesterday about the formula and how my ds was doing on it. My son has had some setbacks lately and she wanted to make sure it wasn’t the formula. We talked about the corn in the formulas and she stated that there is a big difference between corn and the corn syrup solids. She was adamant that the majority of kids don’t have any real problems with the corn syrup. There are some who do have problems with corn, so it can’t be TOTALLY dismissed. But I’d be surprised if this was the problem. I’d be more likely to believe that your lo is either not properly medicated or the Neocate hasn’t “kicked in” yet. Just my opinion.April 7, 2008 at 6:01 pm #50043AnonymousInactiveI have a couple of questions for you regarding the Elecare.
1) Is it a thick or thin formula?2) How does it effect stools, for instance Necoate poops tend to be green and it tends to constipate?April 8, 2008 at 1:21 am #50055AnonymousInactiveElecare is about the same consistancy as the regular formulas you can buy at the grocery store. We thicken ours with 2 tsp. of rice cereal for a 6 ounce bottle. Elecare also comes 6 to a case, where Neocate comes 4 to a case. I believe the cans are about the same price. So it all kind of evens out.My ds has never had problems with his stools. His bm’s are green, but that is the color they have always been. They are soft and pasty, like peanut butter. He’s never been constipated or had diarrhea, even when he gets lots of Mylanta. My dh and I joke that Nicholas has an iron stomach and like to show us the contents!Formulas tend to affect different babies in different ways. I’ve heard that Neocate can be constipating, but there are a lot of moms on here that babies aren’t affected by it. Every kid is different, I suppose.HTH! -
