Sarah has a cold. Runny nose, congestion. Just enough to make it nearly impossible for her to sleep well. Since Sarah was a newborn, her pediatrician has had trouble seeing inside her ears because there is a lot of wax. I asked what I could do about it and she said “Nothing, it’ll just drain on its own”. So about a month ago we went in and Sarah had a slight ear infection. I had asked the doctor to check her ears and she said they looked a little red. She gave us amoxicillian and we went back in two weeks for another reason and had her ears checked again. The doctor said they looked OK, there was still a little fluid but again it was hard to tell b/c of the wax.
ANYWAY…I picked Sarah up from daycare today and she had an ENORMOUS amount of crusted ear wax around the outside of her ear. This is the first time it’s ever “drained” on its own. Is this because she has a cold, a coincidence, or a sign of something more?? Like another ear infection?
Has anyone ever had this happen…is it something I need to take her into the doctor for? Oh and she has NOT had a fever at all since being sick?!???!?
Just wondering what you ladies think!

His ENT said that wax is actually a good thing b/c it has antibiotic properties and helps protect the ear (or something like that I know he said it was a good thing) that being said Aidan ALWAYS has nasty ears, they have to clean them out like 4 times before they can even see to check him for an infection. It’s probably not actually all wax, but the fluid draining out and taking the wax along with it? Which is a VERY good thing (if that’s the case) because standing fluid is the reason babies get ear tubes, if it’s draining out then that’s awesome! Maybe take her to the doc and ask him to check to see if the fluid is gone?

Is her cold getting any better? I certainly hope so. Like I figured with Abby getting pneumonia last week, at least maybe she will be healthy for Christmas – hopefully Sarah will have gotten it over with too, especially after the great Thanksgiving you had!!

I think the otoscope sort of loosens things up a bit because it literally happens every time. It used to happen with the girls, too.
My best guess is that it’s a good thing….wax is good for the ear but too much can be a problem and sometimes the ear just sheds the excess. If it was just wax (no pus or anything nasty looking) I wouldn’t worry unless she seems uncomfortable. BTW my babies all exuded lots of wax from their ears on a regular basis. The doc told me that some people are big exuderes and some are not. It’s just one of those things that differ among individuals. The one time Liza didn’t have anything come out of her ears for a few weeks she ended up with a big, hard clump that had to be removed with some kind of instrument with me holding her head in an arm lock which was quite unpleasant for both us.
