ear infection/sleep nightmare!

Wow, I am dead! Caden hasn’t slept decently in a week now. I’m hoping it’s just this ear infection and not a resurfacing of reflux or even a new habit he has formed since the ear infection started.

He is on a new antibiotic now, because the amoxicillin didn’t clear it up fast enough (according to our ped), so we are now trying Omnicef. Anyone heard of that one or had success with it? I’m hoping this will put an end to this ear infection!

Any ideas/tips on helping a baby sleep better when he has an ear infection? I’ve been giving him Motrin, and it helps at the beginning of the night, but by 2-3am we are up getting more Motrin and are then up for 30 minutes to an hour until it kicks in and Caden can rest again.

Yesterday was his first day on his new antibiotic, so I know it will take a couple of days to start working, but this is a killer!

Hi Emily,
Sorry to hear Caden has been having a hard time sleeping. Bryce was on Omnicef for his ear infections and he responded very well to it. It alway cleared it up quickly when others wouldn’t touch it. Good luck! I hope that he gets feeling better soon and you can all get some sleep!

Sorry, no real advice. We also used to do motrin. Hope it kicks in soon.

AHHHHHH … that was me screaming! I swear, we could switch children and not even know it! This is exactly what happened to us just a few weeks ago!! Unfortunately, we went through the whole round of Amoxicillin before we figured out it wasn’t working. But, I think the Omnicef finally cleared it up. I think so anyway. He still pulls at his ear before going to sleep and when nursing on one side, but I’m hoping that’s just an “I’m sleepy” response and not because there is pain. He seems much happier anyway.

The Omnicef gave Ben horrible diarrhea, so watch for that, and it can also turn their poo redish. His poops are still out of wack from it.

Also, my husband found some homeopathic ear drops at the drugstore, and they seemed to help with the pain. DH still gets ear infections and he said they helped him, so maybe it’s worth a shot. They say on the bottle that it doesn’t interfere with any other medication, etc.

You could also try warm compresses on that ear… actually, the nurse told me that sometimes warm works and sometimes cold does, but I can’t imagine putting a cold pac on a baby’s ear.

Also, Laura mentioned using a lot of saline drops to keep everything moving back there. I’ve been trying to use them regularly (ie. every diaper change).
