Ear ache?

I know several of you have mentioned recently that your baby either has an ear infection or has had one recently.

Well, Caden has had a cold recently, and I think his reflux has resurfaced a bit. I’ve also noticed that he has been holding his left ear, rubbing on it, etc. He hasn’t had any fever whatsoever.

I’m just wondering if that could be a sign of ear infection, or would he have a fever for sure along with it. I’m also not sure if he could just be finding his ears. He has seemed to hold onto the left one more though.

Also, when I was cleaning his ear tonight with a Q-tip, he was fussing. I don’t know if it was because of that or just coincidence.

He had been more wakeful during the night this past week too, but I’m not sure if it’s related to his cold, his ear, or what.

Just wondering what you all have experienced with ear infections/aches.

All these things sound like what I have experienced with both kids.

Poor sleep, sometimes naps are affected sometimes not, fever sometimes, sometimes not.

Definately the pulling the ear thing, and if you apply pressure around the ear they seem like it hurts.

Owen has been more affected with the reflux I think. 3 antibiotics, and the Rocefin shots to clear up 1 infection.

I’d definitely have him checked. He’s showing many of the signs of an ear infection. Myles doesn’t always get a fever with an ear infection.

Yep, sounds like an infection to me. Ben never had a fever with this infection, but he was doing everything else you mentioned. And his followed a cold as well.Bensmama2007-6-4 14:57:41

Yes, I agree! It’s probably worth a trip to the doc. just to be sure. I also found the longer I “guessed” if it was an ear infection or not, the harder it was to treat once we finally went.

I would take him in also. We found that even fluid bothers reflux SO MUCH. Then the fluid usually sits there and turns into an ear infection. If Caden had a cold recently, it probably is the nasty ear monster.

Thanks for your opinions I took him in today, and sure enough he has an ear infection. He will start on his antibiotic today. One ear is just a little red but the other was worse, so our ped wanted to start him on an antibiotic. I hope it clears it up quickly. I know some of your babies have had trouble with reflux and recurrent ear infections – yuk!

Awww… poor little guy. It’s good that you took him in. I hope the antibiotic works quickly and he’s feeling better soon.

So sorry Emily. I HATE EAR INFECTIONS!!! Just wanted to mention, but I’m sure you are, I gave Ben plenty of tylenol and motrin the first few days of the antibiotics. I don’t think they really start clearing up the infection until about the 4th or 5th day.

I’ve been giving him Motrin every 6-8 hours, because he always starts pulling at his ear again, so I figured it was best to keep that up until the antibiotic kicks in.

This is his second day, so hopefully in the next day or so he will start to improve. It’s hard being sleepless again after I was getting used to him sleeping better

Glad you took him in. We were lucky in that the antibiotics helped Hailey’s ears each time.

I just wanted to caution that it is now considered dangerous to use q-tips to clean the ears. It is easy to go in too far and cause an injury that creates permanent hearing loss. They now recommend to use a cloth and just clean lightly around the outside mainly.

Thanks for the tip, Lori. Yes, I only clean around the outside and use a safety Q-tip which has a fat end so that the Q-tip can’t be inserted inside the ear. When I was doing that, he fussed, so I knew his ear must be tender since I barely touched it and didn’t put anything actually inside the ear…poor baby. He’s doing better today I think. Today was the second full day of antibiotics, so hopefully he’ll continue to improve.
