I recently posted about ds having low hemoglobin levels while his Iron was fine. Well on Mon. we had a fecal blood test done which reveled blood in his stool. His pedi. was concerned that he was having some kind of internal, gastric bleeding. Of course his GI Drs. office was closed for the entire week so we had to take him to the ER. They admitted him and ran tests. When I told them that we had been giving ds Motrin for teething the nurse said “Ding, Ding!”. She said that Motrin can cause ulcers and stomach bleeding . I had no idea about this. On two different occasions I asked Drs. about giving ds pain meds daily for teething and they both assured me that as long as I followed the dosage it would be fine. I must admit that ds seemed to be in pain pretty much every day, so we got into the habit of giving him Motrin and/or Tyenol almost every day for 6 weeks or more. It pains me to admit this, but it’s true.
The Drs. gave him some Protonix (which are great!) through a IV the two nights we were there. We got discharged last night (Wed.) and ds is doing great!
I just wanted to share our story so no one has to go through this with their LO. If you do give Motrin pleas know that ulcers and stomach bleeding can occur.

Ann Marie, I could have written your response word for word. We do not have Motrin in our house at all. It aggravated Landen’s reflux so terribly and upset his stomach so bad, I never ever looked back on it. Beth, I am SO glad your DS is OK!!We use Tylenol, Benadryl on the gums or baby Anbesol.jilly782008-09-18 12:51:55

I never would have known that it caused so many problems. I thought it was better since it lasts longer and it helps with swollen gums. Never again….
The teething tablets seem to upset his stomach too. I guess ds will just have to tough it out from now on.

But yes a side effect of “prolonged” daily use is the increased risk of bleeding as it can sort of “thin” the blood. To give you some piece of mind I would still use it but only if needed and not round the clock in the future. What I do/have done with Cooper when really bad teething is Tylenol during the day and a dose of motrin at bedtime as it seems to “last longer” So I would only give motrin 1x/day max and I tried really hard not to do if for more than 5-6 days. I am glad you figured out what was wrong and that he is feeling better. I hope this gives you some piece of mind in using it in the future. But I do know that there are many moms (jill and ann marie included) that have not had to best luck with it. I do use the dye free as well.

I give Nicholas Motrin, but never for more than a few days in a row. Dye free here as well (that dye does not come out of clothing very well). Glad you caught it and he is doing better! -
