drowning in spit up!

So my 8 week old appears to be doing much better now that the combo of prevacid and zantac have finally kicked in. she doesn’t cry/scream much while eating or afterward. but it appears we have traded the crying episodes for spit up. basically whenever she’s awake she is spitting up. it’s never less that a tablespoon and sometimes as much as 1/2 an ounce. (of course, on occasion she vomits up the entire feeding.) we can’t lay her down at all b/c she begins choking. she has to fall asleep first before it’s safe to put her down. we have our first ped GI appt tomorrow morning so i hope to get some answers then. i think it might be a problem with that flap thing b/w her stomach and esophagus. how would that treat that if that is the problem?

I’m glad to hear the medicine seems to be helping her pain. I definitely know how you feel about the spitting up. My son’s always been a big spitter. Unfortunately, if she does have a weak LES (that flap thing), then usually you just have to wait until she gets older & it develops & her system matures. There is a surgery that can be done in extreme cases.

The spitting up shouldn’t be a problem unless she isn’t gaining weight or if she is aspirating at all. There is a test to determine this.

I’m happy to hear that she’s feeling better.

My son was a huge spitter too but he usually puked up entire feeds. I was told he would just outgrow it and he finally did. I’m guessing her doctor will tell you to just wait it out and she will outgrow it too.
