Hello
My baby Alice is 6 months, weighs 14lbs and has silent refluxShe got a prescription for Prilosec for 6.5mg once a dayWe started Prilosec last Wednesday and I noticed after taking Thursday’s dose at 10am, her second day on it, she was remarkably different, until 5:30pm, then it all went downhill and she was screaming, crying, needing to held and rockedIt was like the tablet last 7 1/2 hoursThe night-time was awful, and the usual waking every 45 to 90 minutes through the night to feed to soothe her throat and get back to sleepSo I split the dose and raised it to 10mg, giving 5mg (half a tablet) at 10am and then 5mg at 8pm (we have 10 mg tablets that need to be dissolved)We’ve been doing this since Friday, so 4 days on a split doseI notice she’s fine till about 3pm after her 10am dose and likewise, she sleeps now for 4 hours solid (incredible!!!!!!) from 8pm till 12 to 1amThen she wakes and is breast-feeding on and off every 40 minutes till 6:30am when we just get up, she is even worse than beforeSo can anyone help – we are only 6 days into this medicine and I know it’s early days, but she is different already – do we need1) to give it more time2) to give a higher dose3) to give a higher dose and split more, like 3 times a dayThanks to anyone who can help and share their experiences, really gratefulBest wishesSarah & AliceOctober 27, 2008 at 2:07 pm #58099AnonymousInactive6.5mg is very low. My 3 month old daughter needs two doses of 10mg per day of Losec and even then it still does not last the full 24hrs.

I have been told to wait 2 weeks to see a result – yet I saw a difference on the second dose, but then a return to the status quo once it wore offDid you see a sudden improvement one day after 2 weeks or did you just continue to have this on-off thing with the drug working only some of each 24 hour cycle?I guess what I’m trying to say is – can I hope for any further improvement after 2 weeks? Ontop of what I’ve seen so far? Sorry, the sleep deprivation kind of kills my ability to communicate clearly!I just keep hoping for my baby to be comfortable and for us both to get some decent sleep! Also, could I ask why you are moving to Lansoprazole,I see in your signature?SarahOctober 27, 2008 at 5:43 pm #58109AnonymousInactivePrilosec is often compounded incorrectly and becomes ineffective after two weeks. Janna is on week two and we didn’t see substantial relief until I upped the dose.
We’re still waiting on the bufferbabies to allow us to compound/suspend the Prevacid so I’m not sure what kind of difference it will make for her yet. I’m hoping it will be a Big one.

I’d try to switch to either prevacid solutabs or prevacid in buffer babies. Either way though, if the dose is too low it won’t do much to help. Can you get your doc to change the dose?
