Okay, not really looking for answers, just need to vent!
Owen went for his 6 mo check up today where I went all prepared to state my case on the reflux meds. He currently takes 1/2 tsp. per day which is way under any recommendation. Anyway, I was bummed because he only weighed 14lbs 7oz, the 5th percentile which started the visit off on the wrong foot, for me anyway!
The doc looked in his ears and one was infected, so then when I was telling him that he’s not sleeping well and I think we need to up his meds, the answer was, it’s because he has an ear infection……
Okay, I’m sure that doesn’t help anything, but I still think that he is having some acid problems! Every morning he just smells like acid and puke and he is wiggling around so much he is totally upside down in his bed which made me put his bed back down completely flat because I’m sure ending upside down in a reclined bed certainly is going to bring a lot up!!!!!!
My doc had no idea what the marci-kids website was all about, he didn’t think that a kid needed medicine more than once a day and I’m really starting to wonder about him!! He did say “well, makes sense that we could try it twice a day”, but he only upped the meds to 2ML twice a day for a total of 12MG per day I believe, I could be a little off…..
I really don’t think that I could change docs right now, all that we have been through with the MSPI and reflux and respiratory issues, I just don’t think I could put myself through that!!!!!
I also think he is getting his bottom teeth in although I can’t really feel them yet and it could be weeks before they ever show, the kid is just not really happy!
My husband is going out of has been traveling with his job 2 of the last 3 weeks, and I just think I may have a mental breakdown soon!
I know tomorrow is a new day, I can look forward to that!!! Has anyone changed docs after going through all of this?
Has anyone had a lot of trouble with your child always sounding congested? I know it is common with reflux, but Owen always seems to have a cough! This is the first ear infection and I know that is common with reflux, but I just feel like the kid is always sick!!!!
As always thanks for listening!!!!

I haven’t been through half as much as you have so I’m not the right person to give you any advice about whether or not to see another doctor. I think that I probably would…
I hope things improve soon. You sure have your hands full, especially with dh being gone so much.
April 13, 2007 at 8:47 pm #30461AnonymousInactiveDo you have a family Dr/physician and if so could you try them? Also maybe try Laura’s fax fax fax strategy?
April 13, 2007 at 8:54 pm #30463AnonymousInactiveyou can also ask for a referal to a ped. GI.. i know that has really helped us! our ped. is basically useless.. not to sound too harsh 😉 GI’s underdose.. BUT peds REALLY underdose to the point the med is basically useless!
also you can take him back after his ear infection clears up.. and insist that he still is acting as if he is pain. he will probably just end up sending you to a ped. GI anyhow.. thats what my ped did.
i hope he is happier after the ear infection goes away!
April 13, 2007 at 10:09 pm #30470AnonymousInactiveWe have been to ped GI with the MSPI. She was WONDERFUL! At least she was with that situation, although when I went to her office, my child was not eating anything and not sleeping at all and I was left to deal with both children as my husband was at a conference out of state. I bawled the entire time I was in her office, and that is when we ended up in the hospital. I’m sure I thought anyone was wonderful at that time! It’s only funny now thinking back because I was a total basket case!!
My ped GI said that she didn’t think that splitting the dose for a morning/night schedule would help, but after all that you guys have said I think it’s at least worth a try!
I do have a family doc that I go to that I really like. A high school friend of mine is his nurse and I have her direct line, so I guess maybe I should just call her and have her run it by him!!
The funniest thing about the ped visit today was he pulled out this crumpled up piece of paper that looked like it was years old and showed me the Prevacid dose that Owen should have. If that’s all the more up to date he is, I guess I should maybe look elsewhere! I keep saying that when Owen is a year old, if foods go okay and things are a little more under control, I’ll look for a new doc. But in reality, I think I’ll just be in too deep with this doc and just continue to see him because he knows the whole story.
And now to change the subject, does anyone else have a husband who travels or works a lot of hours?? How do you deal with it?? I’ve been thinking of getting a college girl or someone who could just give me a few hours to myself!! I think we can all agree we need that! I could handle everything before with just one child, but Griffin was sooooo easy, I don’t really remember feeling like I needed time! My husband is going to be gone Tue-Sun and I am just DREADING it already!! It makes it hard to have fun before he leaves because I stress about how it will be while he’s gone way before he ever leaves!!!
By the way someone needs to feel me in on the dh and all of those initials stand for when describing family! I’m kind of a computer dummy!
Thanks for listening!!

April 14, 2007 at 9:58 am #30488AnonymousInactiveI would definitely reccommend looking for a college student to help out. I did it alone and it was horrible. My 2nd and 3rd babies both had reflux and my dh did next to nothing to help. He was here, but I was still doing it alone. It really was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do in my life. If you can find someone to help out some I think it would make a big difference in how you feel, and it would be good for the children too. The happier and more rested you are, the better mom you will be.
The family doc would be a great idea, especially if his nurse is your friend. Maybe fax her the marci-kids info and ask her to share it with the doctor. It was my family doc who prescribed the marc-kids dose for Myles and it really turned things around for him.
Good luck!
April 14, 2007 at 10:54 am #30494AnonymousInactiveI’m sorry to hear that your ped isn’t very helpful. I would try the GI as well, and if that fails, then look for another doc. Most GIs should know at this point that it’s better to dose more than once a day, I think it’s pretty common knowledge now (at least most suggest dosing twice). You can also try the route of getting Dr. Phillips to call your doc directly. Are you using zegerid?
Also, I think it’s a great idea to try to get some help. My kids were 20 months apart, and it was hard to do it even with help from my husband. He also is supposed to travel a lot, but wasn’t really able to because of our situation.
April 14, 2007 at 5:00 pm #30514AnonymousInactiveI’m so sorry. I have had to deal with dr and gi’s who still didn’t help my son. It wasn’t until Dr. Phillips called my sons dr and explained it all to her that we finally got some help. I don’t know if he still does that, but it’s worth a shot. I know it can all be so aggrivating. You go to the dr ready to fight it out and then you get there and they make you feel like a real dummy. They give you a look like hey I’m the dr here and your not. UGH
April 18, 2007 at 3:11 pm #30899AnonymousInactiveOh I really feel for you My husband had to go out of town when our baby was about 6 weeks old, and I thought I would never make it! We have 3 other children too, but besides that, the hardest part was the constant crying I had to deal with by myself. Actually, even when he was just at work during the day, there were many days I wondered how I would make it through, but I prayed for help and made it
I don’t have advice really, but I just wanted to tell you that I have been through what you’re going through, and for us it is so much better now that our baby is almost 6 months old. Our other boys had reflux too and outgrew it at around 6 months, so it seems our youngest is following in their footsteps.
Please get some help if at all possible. If you have any family or friends who would be willing to hold the baby while you just shower or even take a nap, that would be so refreshing for you. I had my mom come over one day (she had to take off work) and do just that. I also had my husband take off work twice I think (maybe 3 times) to come home and drive the baby around while I took a 2 hour nap. Those times were so life-saving for me. I felt like a new person and like I could deal with the colic again.
To answer your questions:
I have not gone through exactly what you have, but I have gone through similar things… the acid smelling breath, the inclined mattress, the doctor who doesn’t get it, the husband going out of town, and the cough. Our baby was never really congested and never has had an ear infection (knock on wood), but he does have a cough whenever he is having “one of those days”. He pretty much just has days now where he seems to have reflux, but it’s not every day anymore, and sometimes it may just be a couple of days in one week and then not again for a week or more. So, I’m thinking he is coming out of his…
It will get better – you have to keep reminding yourself of that. Also, for your baby the right meds/doses may be just the magic trick to take care of it. For us, Prevacid didn’t solve anything, but for many babies, it is a lifesaver!
Good luck to you. I hope you find something to help you and your little one soon.
