OMG, I dont know WHAT to do. We got Catelin on Prevacid and increased her dose to 2 x a day(7.5). Seemed to start to get relief and then suddenly, everythign has gotten SO MUCH WORSE!! Saw doc this morning and he said the reflux isnt causing her this pain and that she has “true colic.” She is unable to sleep ALL day long and was up from 6:30am-1:00 am the next morning. We are switching to Neocate but honestly, Im losing it. I dont know WHAT To do and this GI guys is one of the leading GI guys in the NATION(spoke to my ped, I didnt see him directly). If I give her the prevacid 3x a day, when do I still give the Axid(it doesn seem there are enough hours in the day to space out 4 hours)? And, am I suppose to give the prevacid around meals??? SOMETHING has to give, something!!
July 7, 2008 at 11:48 am #53456AnonymousInactivePrevacid should be given on an empty stomach, 30-60 minutes prior to a full feeding (It’s difficult to get a baby to wait when they’re hungry, our DR said to do the best we can!)
July 7, 2008 at 1:18 pm #53462hellbenntKeymasterprevacid solutabs must be given on an empty stomach. There is now (once again, hallelujah!) prevacid in caracream which does NOT have to be given around meals- read through here & look for purple post(s): Caracream: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=11191&PID=94236#94236
also you can TRY giving the axid (have you figured out the dose for 10mgs per kilo?) 2hrs seperate from the prevacid. when jonah was on PPIs our ped GI said to give the zantac 2hrs seperate & it did work for him. I generally tell folks to go for the 5 hours because that’s what the majority of ped GIS say to do…but hey, try 2hrs & see what happens…
July 7, 2008 at 2:04 pm #53468AnonymousInactiveWe are on liquid prevacid. Any ideas hwy she’s getting bwrose after a few days an dnot better? What am I doing wrong:(???
July 7, 2008 at 2:14 pm #53469hellbenntKeymasterit might ‘just’ be the compound (liquid) prevacid. you must TELL your doctor to write out how EXACTLY it needs to be compounded. compounding from lori: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=7855&TPN=1
in the meantime, I’d contact http://www.marci-kids.com and ask about caracream. read here, especially the purple post(s) so you know what Caracream IS: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=11191&PID=94236#94236I KNOW that I ‘throw’ a LOT at you! It’s because I HEAR YOUR DESPERATION and I want to HELP YOU.Do you have axid, too? Perhaps I helped you figure out the dose for your baby? I would give this ALSO until you get things straightened out…give 4hrs seperate from the prevacid…hellbennt2008-07-07 14:17:26
July 7, 2008 at 2:24 pm #53471AnonymousInactiveIm pretty screwed because my ped(2 one) doesnt believe the reflux is causing her all this trouble(she’s gaining weight). I am even more confused because the GI specialist agreed. EVEN more confused because she is getting worse and worse and I can’t take it. Her liquid is compounded w/ sodium bicarb and I dont even have a “basis” for asking the ped to switch. He asked me how he could “follow” someone online vs a leading gi specialist. What do you say to that??? How many hours apart should i give the prevacid?
July 7, 2008 at 2:39 pm #53472hellbenntKeymasteryou say you’re ‘following’ a leading PHARMACOLOGIST who is at the forefront of RESEARCH addressing PPIs and infants! I’m not mad at you.
I really don’t like your doctors. I feel so bad for you!give the prevacid 4hrs seperate from the axid (and mylanta) . or try 2 hours. do what you gotta do.ask the pharmacist for a print-out of all the ingredients. if there’s ANYTHING like setevia powder, or any other additional flavouring agents, then it needs to be made PLAIN. you can ask for flavoring on the side, that you give w/ each individual dose to help it go down better. Also in the print-out it, if the dose you give is less than 7mls (it most likely is!), then check to see that the compound is made with 16.8 percent sodium bicarbonateGive the nutrimigen a good full 2 weeks…have you had diaper(s) checked for occult blood?hellbennt2008-07-07 14:39:38
July 7, 2008 at 2:55 pm #53475AnonymousInactiveWe just faxed everything over to my doc. Enough is enough. I will call the pharmacy and see the ingredients listed. We’ve been on Nutramigen for 7 weeks.
July 7, 2008 at 2:57 pm #53476AnonymousInactiveOh and just sent a diaper in for testing this afternoon.
July 7, 2008 at 3:13 pm #53477AnonymousInactiveCalled pharmacy- only made with 8.4 and they can’t make it any higher. Called another pharmacy and they have to look into it and want the research info. This is not going to be easy, AT ALL. If she doesnt have a milk allerygy would it be better for me to get the tabs and make it myself with Caracream??
July 7, 2008 at 3:18 pm #53478hellbenntKeymasteryou would get capsules and get caracream (now called Buffer Babies) & make it yourself.
get pharmacist’s name and now would be the time to contact dr philips-email him re: buffer babies and ask him to please in the meantime to contact pharmacist (get pharmacist’s name & fax # – her/his email would be even better…)What information can I give my physician regarding the reasoning behind your dosing?
Our http://www.marci-kids.com/research.html research page lists numerous articles and studies regarding drug metabolism in children, as well as other new and relevant topics. The Patient Stories page might also give some good insight.hellbennt2008-07-07 15:25:03
July 7, 2008 at 3:23 pm #53479AnonymousInactiveI actually heard from Dr. Phillips on Friday after submiting a request for a local doc(I was so surpirsed). He asked for basic info on catelin and I havent heard anything further yet. OK- here’s the 64,000$$$ question. Could this actually be colic like the doc says?? How do I really know??
July 7, 2008 at 3:27 pm #53481hellbenntKeymastercolic does NOT last all day! COLIC is when they don’t know anything else to tell you.
This should help a lot!Wondertime article/colic solved: http://wondertime.go.com/learning/article/interview-colic-expert.htmlgo to page TWO & find the probiotics mentioned. Try these, too, why not?July 7, 2008 at 3:32 pm #53483AnonymousInactiveHe told me today that “true colic” is screaming about 18 hours a day. I wanted to smack him but I truly dont have anywhere else to go(plus he’s SO frggin nice-just stupid like all the other overly conservative docs here in CT). I’ve actually been giving her priobiotics at the advice of a ped chiropracter.
July 7, 2008 at 3:36 pm #53485AnonymousInactiveWHY isnt all of this Marci-Kid info commonly known? I mean, these docs are all so one sided in their beliefs. Reflux doesnt cause pain.
I dont know if I asked this already but—
How far apart should i space the Prevacid doses-and LASTLY-I swear-Am I wasting my time on the 8.4%??? Shouldnt SOMETHING be better then nothing?? -
