You asked about the flaxseed oil–I got the idea from the boards, but my GI specialist is thrilled with the results. I add 1 tablespoon to the formula/ rice milk mixture and blend it in the blender. Then I feed it in his sippy cup. He doesn’t drink it down, but if I put the cup in his mouth, he’ll take a couple of swallows–so I do that throughout the day. My pediatrician also suggested I add oil to all his food to help him put on some weight.
This is my recipe: 3 oz Alimientum, 2 tbs Duocal, 1 tbs flaxseed oil, 6 oz chocolate flavored rice milk.

I would keep on nursing but my supply is dipping and he is just too busy during the day. I am encouraged to see your guy will take the alimentum in the rice milk. I might just have to try that!
Thanks!!!!

Thank you for the tip. I tried to add the flax seed oil to her morning bottle, but found that she didn’t like it. It separated by the time she actually drank some, and then wouldn’t go back for more. Does blending stop the separation? I am worried about adding it to her bottle, because she chokes so often that I am afraid of aspirating oil into the lungs. I’m so glad to hear that it’s working so well for your son. Thanks again.

When he wasn’t eating well I began doing this becasue I had read about it and I have still continued to do it because he is by no means fat and he takes it just fine. I only buy organic canola oil that is expeller pressed which I believe means there was no petroleum type products used in the processing of the oil. I found it at our local health food store. Canola is very bland tasting which is why I think he has always taken it okay. I hope it works for you Lori. I feel so badly for you with all your struggles with Hailey. I was right there too at one point and it is so distressing. You r whole life and frame of mind revolves around how much they have eaten. I know flaxseed oil has to be refrigerated and can’t be heated so if she takes her botles warm this could be a problem. Brodie has taken his bottles cold from the refrig for probably a year.
February 15, 2006 at 3:00 pm #1569AnonymousInactiveThanks Robin. Did you have to blend it to prevent separation? Hailey likes her bottles room temp and so I hate to have to blend and refrigerate.

I do notice a little oil residue on the bottle, but at least he’s getting something from it. As a matter of fact, I get his bottle ready at night and in the morning the oil is always sitting on the top and I just shake it up and give it to him. One teaspoon only provides about 3-4 grams of fat and 40 calories, but over a nine month period that must have helped him gain at least a pound or so. Maybe try the canola nd do a teaspoon instead of a tablespoon. When I think about drinking a tablespoon of oil, it makes me want to gag!!!!
