I know you all are really getting tired of seeing posts from me where I continue to complain that things are not getting better, but here’s another one! We switched Ben last week to the 40 mg. packs of Zegerid and added the Mylanta, which, according to Dr. Phillips, should help to cut down on his gas and help him to take the medicine easier. Well, he’s taking it just fine, and the gas has lessened to a degree, but he is still not doing great with it at all. He has explosive, and I mean explosive diarrhea on the Zegerid and the gas and gurgling that go along with it. I am also beginning to wonder if he needs a higher dose. He weighed 15.7 lbs. on Tuesday of last week and will be 3 months on Thursday. It seems like his acid is starting to bother him again…I thought about using TUMS instead of Mylanta in case that was the problem, but they have SOY in them and I’m trying to figure out if he is soy intolerant.
Also, I have been on the elimination diet now for a week and am so frustrated by the whole process. I burst out in tears yesterday after church when my dh and daughter sat down to eggs and cinnamon rolls (our after church tradition), and I ate turkey and a baked potato yet again. I wouldn’t have a problem with the diet except for the fact that I don’t see any improvement in my son. I did see some lessening of the spit up for a few days, but this weekend, it was back in full force, and last night, he wouldn’t go to sleep until well after midnight, and was uncomfortable all night. I did eat zecchini for the first time Saturday and Sunday night, but it’s on the approved diet menu, so I don’t get what’s going on. Why would he seem to do okay and the next day do so horribly? Iv’e thought about eliminating rice too since I know some have a problem with it, but it’s my only grain, and my digestive system is having a bit of a rebellion too. How will I ever know if it’s food bothering him once I start adding things back in when I can’t get a good baseline of his behavior? What does an intolerant baby act like versus your typical refluxer? AAAAHHHH??? Too many questions, and too many options as to what is causing the problem. It makes me want to scream, and I have been, mostly at my daughter because she’s the only one here I can do it to. I HATE THIS! And I’m terrified of the thought that I still have months and months of this to go before the end is in sight
December 11, 2006 at 3:05 pm #20055AnonymousInactiveMylanta causes my son the worse gas and diarrhea you can imagine. It gets so bad that we have to give him a bath and change his clothes. He has been on Zegerid for over a year and a half and doesn’t get diarrhea from it. If you can get him on a higher dose you could eliminate the mylanta. He needs to be taking at least 14 mgs at a time to have enough buffer in it. NOTE I DO NOT RECOMMEND ANYONE DO THE FOLLOWING… We added our own sodium bicarb when Colt was on the lower dose because he couldn’t tolerate the mylanta. AGAIN NOT RECOMMENED…
December 11, 2006 at 3:26 pm #20058AnonymousInactiveI have thought Mylanta was the problem myself. I just don’t know what to do about it. I don’t think he needs as much as 14 mg. at a time, so what to do until then????
December 11, 2006 at 5:03 pm #20068AnonymousInactiveMaybe take a run to the store and check out all the different tums products, generic brands etc and see if any contain no soy.
December 11, 2006 at 5:12 pm #20069hellbenntKeymasternot sure about the mylanta problem…is there another brand of Tums that doesn’t have the soy/
Give yourself a big pat on the back for being almost half way there on the diet!!! I did the diet; it’s hard but it was so very worth it for me.
I didnt see any improvements on the diet itself. but, when I added things back I saw ‘acid’ attacks 3 to 4 hours later. then I knew. for instance tomato sauce. after the 2 weeks I added foods back in the WRONG way, but hey this was 3yrs ago and I didn’t know what I was doing. I didn’t know proteins built up in the system! so I drank a glass of milk & sat back waiting for all hell to break loose. when it didn’t, I deemed milk to be safe. then I went for chicken parmesian. ahhh. YIKES. Jonah screamed bloody murder for hours after that one. oops. So I figured it was the tomato (didn’t occur to me that maybe it was the cheese or the pasta, which it turned out it wasn’t). Tried tomato sauce once more soon after. Ok, I learned my lesson!!! and so on…
now, in retrospect, if jonah was actually mspi, (I really didn’t think he was, but I was desperate) then that glass of milk might not have had an immediate effect after all- I would have to wait 2 weeks of dairy to see if things got worse…I only say all this so that at the end of 2 weeks of the elimination diet you can figure out your ‘game plan’ of how & what to add back in…
if your gut feeling is it’s the rice, try cutting it out for the next week & see if anything improves?
and maybe adding in barley? or oats? now, these have gluten & should be avoided if you think celiac is at play…or just cut out rice this next week & gorge on potatoes () & see if the no rice does anything…
I wish I could help you more…
December 11, 2006 at 6:06 pm #20075AnonymousInactivein all honestly i dont think guar gum will be a problem with the tums. maybe jsut try it out. mylanta really gave my son some bad gas and cramping.
December 11, 2006 at 8:36 pm #20085AnonymousInactiveFirst of all pat yourself on the back for even taking on the elimination diet. I didn’t becuase my husband and others discouraged me because they thought I was being silly…so here is what happened instead…I ended up taking a bunch of stuff out of my diet just to be safe…and then never really knowing if it made a difference or not…if I am lucky enough to have another child, and they have problems like this, I will do the diet hands down…it is two weeks to KNOW what is bothering your child vs. the one year I have spent guessing.
Also, here is something from the Dr. Sear’s website…I don’t know if your child has sleeping problems, but I am sure that this transfers to anything:
Typically, mothers will find that when they change their diet baby may sleep better for a few nights only to start waking again a lot for a few days or a week or so, at which time the sleep again improves. It’s important to know this so that you will not be tempted to give up when you think “it’s not working.”
Good luck and keep us posted.
December 11, 2006 at 11:14 pm #20107AnonymousInactiveI think I have said this to your before, but your story sounds so much like mine. I am always yelling at my 2 yr old. He doesn’t get the attention he needs so he whines, hits Justice, and basically does anything he knows will bug me. Like calling me Shelby. With my lack of sleep I end up yelling at him. Oh and trying to get Justice to take a nap, I am always saying Luke be quite. It doesn’t take much to wake up Justice. I just want to spend some one on one time with Luke and it just doesn’t happen. All that to say I know what your going through.
The mylanta caused dir. and explosive poops for Justice. We are now doing tums. So far so good. His poop color has also changed since stopping the mylanta too. Don’t know what that’s about.
Let us know what you find out with the diet. I tryed it for a week and didn’t see a difference so I stopped. I wish I would’ve just kept going the extra week. Who knows that may be why Justice doesn’t sleep so well.
December 12, 2006 at 5:11 am #20115AnonymousInactiveI know how you feel.
I have had 9 months of wondering what the hell is going on!!!Now the new GI said she has secondary reflux caused by food intolerances, we have cut out dairy/soya and eggs. I am keeping a food diary but how do i know if it is something she ate or i ate which sets her off?? She is not nursing as much now as she is having 3 meals a day so shouldn’t things get better????? errrrrr who knows!!
She is also on some meds for the allergys to see if that helps too but sometimes i wonder what if it is just reflux and she needs higher PPIs? what if its both? what if its neither? you get the drift!!
She is doing better but no where near ”’normal” so we have another 3 weeks to go until we see the GI again. Hoe do i know if it was swapping to the prevacid which helped, or the allergy meds or the diet or all 3?
I have a headache just thinking about it so now i just try and get through each day hoping things get better.
I know how you feel and the holiday period is so not the time to go on the diet either!
December 13, 2006 at 10:31 am #20265AnonymousInactiveWell, only a few more days of the total restricted diet, and I’m glad but also a little nervous. I can’t figure out what to add back in first and what signs I should be looking for since he already has good and bad days. Are there other foods that take a long time to build up in the system like milk protein? Or can I expect to see some sort of reaction within a few days? Ahh… again, so many questions. Anyway, I think oats are next for me. I would also love to get another protein source added in soon. I’m about to turn into a turkey myself.
Laura, I don’t know if celiac is in play or not. Are there symptoms of this that I can look for? I hope not because I would really love to start giving him oatmeal soon mixed with his morning meds. as we are still having problems getting them into him.
