Hello everyone,
Have any of you noticed your baby getting more diaper rashes after going onto whole milk? I’ve been slowly introducing milk into Myles’ diet for the last few weeks and he is now getting a diaper rash every time he has a BM. It’s a bright red rash which clears up after a few hours with enough desitin….if he doesn’t fill his pants again.
He’s also pooping 2 – 3 times per day, which is actually a good thing for him because he used to be consitipated, but every time he poops he gets this rash. So, he basically has a rash almost all the time because as soon as it clears up he poops again!
What do you think? Is he pooping more because of the milk? Could the rash be from a milk allergy or intolerance?
Thanks.

My daughter isn’t on milk just yet, but I thought I might say something about the diaper rash. Brianna went through this period where there was something in her poops that was causing a rash…for the life of me, to this day, I don’t know what…I didn’t eat anything new, nor did she. She didn’t have diarrhea or anthing, but I would take her diaper off, and her bum would be bright red. Well I am a worrier mom, so when it didn’t go away I took her into the Ped. She said that sometimes this just happens. I started putting A&D cream (in the pump) on her bum at every diaper change and in a few days it just went away. However, I still put the cream on her bum before all her naps and when she goes to sleep.
Anyway, to make a very long winded story short…it could be nothing…as a matter of fact, since you have been giving your Son milk for such a while, I would think that is not it, but I guess the best thing is to keep the cream on, and maybe back off the milk for a few days. After the rash heals, try the milk again…if the rash comes back, well, maybe then it is something… 🙂
November 27, 2006 at 1:11 pm #19046AnonymousInactiveCould he be teething? I know my boys would sometimes have diaper rashes like that when they were teething – especially molars.
I don’t know much about milk intolerances though, so that could be a possibility too. Hopefully someone else will know the symptoms.
November 27, 2006 at 1:41 pm #19047AnonymousInactiveb’s mom, Hmmm….maybe I’ll try the A&D cream. The desitin does seem to help some but not enough because it keeps coming back. I’ll look for some when I go to walmart tomorrow. I could stop the milk for a few days, but his doc is anxious to get him off of formula and onto whole milk and I just feel so conflicted about it. That’s a good idea, though. At least then I’d know. Thanks.
Heather, he is teething….he’s cut six teeth in the last two months and he’s working on a few more (!) but he’s never had rashes from teething before. The rashes started about 10 days ago when I increased his milk from 2 ounces to 4 or 5 ounces per day. So, I just don’t know. Thanks.

They were horrible and went all the way from her bum to her vagina. She was in so much pain once that we actually thought she broke her leg because she was limping. It turns out that it was pain from a brutal rash! Nothing would take them away, because she also had multiple bms a day. We found that the desitin was like a temporary bandaid kind of fix… it worked at night, but not during the day that well. I hate to tell you that we had this problem so much, that the only thing that really did take it was away was toilet training. Then they stopped miraculously. I think that teething made it much worse for her, b/c she always had teething poop. She often needed antifungals to heal them, b/c after a few days of being there the skin went irritated and the rash went fungal. More recently we’ve been wondering if she has some kind of milk intolerance, as her bum is always red like a monkey, and she often has to run to the bathroom after having a glass of milk. I would do an experiment and reduce his milk again and see if that makes a difference. If not, then you know it’s not the milk. If it doesn’t go away, I would also take him to the doc and see if it’s gone fungal. Poor Myles.
November 27, 2006 at 4:47 pm #19065AnonymousInactiveLori, that must have been terrible! Myles’ rash isn’t quite that bad and it doesn’t seem to bother him except during diaper changes….but it is awfully red and it comes back every single time he poops. I’ll have to stop the milk for a few days and see how he does. I was hoping I wouldn’t have to….
I don’t think it’s fungal because it pretty much clears up within several hours if he doesn’t poop again. What do you think? Whenever my girls had fungal rashes the rash never went away unless I put an antifungal (like Monistat) on it.
And it figures, they stopped making the Good Start 2 concentrate that he was on…..now I’ll have to use the powder.
***Oh I forgot to mention in my original post that he’s been eating yogurt, too. I hope I don’t have to stop that as well.
It’s so very strange because he was consitpated on Good Start, but poops 3 times a day on milk. I just don’t get it.
November 27, 2006 at 9:07 pm #19108AnonymousInactiveIt used to be that I would say it would be totally unrelated but now I think that it can be a sign of milk allergy. I really hope that it is not the case for you.
November 28, 2006 at 7:11 am #19129AnonymousInactiveCould definitely be related to the milk – some people have had better luck
with 2% instead of whole milk (easier for the body to digest) so that may be
an option to try too? I’ll also recommend the Pinxav cream again – we love it!
November 28, 2006 at 9:34 am #19139AnonymousInactiveThanks, Sarah. That’s what my gut is telling me….even though I so want it to not be the milk.
Thanks, Karen. I thought about the Pinxav cream….I’ll probably order some. And maybe the 2% would be better. I’ll probably stop the milk for a while and see how it goes…then maybe try the 2%. If that doesn’t work I’ll have to keep him on Good Start or try Goat’s milk.
November 28, 2006 at 10:16 am #19145AnonymousInactiveAlso, I heard that sweet acidophilus (sp??) is a good one to try too (forgive for sounding silly when I talk about this stuff, but I am not good with technical terms). I guess sweet acidophilus has the flora and the other…well stuff… that is in probiotics that is supposed to help with digestion, etc….I had a friend in high school who could not tolerate regular milk, but could drink sweet acidophilus until the cows came home (he-he!) And she could still eat cheese and yogurt just fine.
Oh, one more thing…if you do try A&D try to get the kind in the pump…it seems to work better…and we put a generous layer on 🙂 Good luck! Keep us posted

November 28, 2006 at 10:39 am #19150AnonymousInactiveSweet Acidophilus?? What is that?
I was going to go to walmart today but we are having freezing rain and the roads are slick, so we’re staying home all day. I’ll look for the A&D cream (pump) when I get out again. Hopefully tomorrow. I hate being stuck at home!
November 28, 2006 at 11:02 am #19159AnonymousInactiveI think it is just a special way they prepare the milk…I will ask my friend.
Yuck…freezing rain is no fun…I never go out in that stuff..
November 28, 2006 at 12:49 pm #19168AnonymousInactiveChristine – since the milk proteins in Good Start are partially broken down
and he was tolerating that fine, it leads me to think it’s just an immature
digestive system issue, not an allergy or actual intolerance per se. I can’t
remember if you’ve had Myles on probiotics, but if not, IMO, I’d take him off
milk for at least 2 weeks (maybe a month) and at the same time start him on
a good probiotic for children (we use Nature’s Way Primadophilus for
Children) and try 2% milk in 2-4 weeks.
November 28, 2006 at 12:57 pm #19170AnonymousInactiveThanks Karen. I actually was considering pro-biotics but I don’t know much about them. We have a little health food store in town so I’ll check and see what they have. If they don’t have it I can look online.
Do you think I have to stop the yogurt, too? I was thinking maybe the yogurt is ok because it contains acidophilus. But I really don’t know.
How’s Marisa? Eating any better?
November 28, 2006 at 2:18 pm #19177AnonymousInactiveI’d stop the yogurt until the rashes clear up and then maybe introduce that
before the milk again. LOVE probiotics.
Marisa just got over a wicked virus which may have been complicated by
teething and/or shots. Fever is finally gone and she’s getting back to herself
and catching up on much needed sleep. She had been starting to eat a tiny
bit better before she got sick and then ate next to nothing and now slowly
starting to pick up again – so we’ll see. Thanks for asking!
