Jill, we’ve seen both a pedi psychologist and a pedi psychiatrist. Their approach is different, but I’m not sure why you pick one over the other. We’re seeing the ped today, and I plan to ask for another referral, so I’m not sure which he’ll choose this time. Good luck.

Thanks so much everyone! I have even more to report back with. The psychologist that will be seeing Kade called and told me that looking at the notes/profile, she did not think he had OCD or possible aspergers. She actually acted like dx a child so young with OCD was absurd. She said “has anyone ever mentioned high functioning autism?”
and THEN, I took him a day later to his assessment with the school board and this lady who assessed him had 25 years experience. She blocked off 1 hour with him but spent 2.5 hrs with him. 15 mins into it she said “he doesn’t have ocd, and there is no way he has aspergers, he is way to social and he converses back and forth in conversation”. I asked her what her thoughts were. She made it clear she could NOT diagnose him, but that she KNEW he had high functioning autism, she had seen it over and over. She said his “ocd and rituatlistic behavior” is just part of his autism. They ALL have it to some degree. She also said that he had Vestibular Dysfunction with gravitational insecturity and that is why when he sits to eat or do an activity he absolutely cannot be still and stands up every 2 seconds to readjust himself on the chair and replace his feet. It explains to me why he won’t potty at home without something under his feet or without a toilet ring and why he won’t potty in public at all (still in pullups in public) She was VERY insightful. She said that was PART of our feeding problem right there. She said he needs OT, not speech! She could understand him fine.I’m getting frustrated at going in circles, but getting LOTS of answers and am now the squeaky wheel. We go Weds to the child psych who mentioned his profile looked like High Functioning Autism, I’d like to see what she thinks after assessing him. I’ll take the 2 out of 3 and get the dx.jilly782009-03-16 15:55:04
March 16, 2009 at 3:56 pm #61659AnonymousInactiveOh and Laura, I forgot completely that you see IEP’s all of the time! I already wrote one for Kade!!! LOL! They dont ask us to write them like that, they ask for our input, but I took it upon myself to write one out anyway and they can take what they want from it. I should email it to you.
March 16, 2009 at 6:29 pm #61667AnonymousInactiveHey Jill,
I’m late to this… but just wanted to add in… your description of Kade eating, his potty needs, readjusting in seats, etc… sounds VERY much like what Claire does. Part of her public potty issues are due to the the loud noises, but we are CONSTANTLY telling her to sit back down at the table, etc. All that to say, that she is currently in OT for her sensory stuff, and part of her issues are Vestibular, and she has gravitational dysfunction as well. Anyway, so it sounds like the lady on the school board probably DID know what she was talking about.
March 16, 2009 at 8:42 pm #61674AnonymousInactiveWow Jill! Sounds like you’ve been given some great information!!! I’m glad you’re being the squeaky wheel! It takes wonderful mommies who are willing to fight for what is best for their child…no matter what obstacles you are facing! You’re amazing!
March 16, 2009 at 8:49 pm #61675AnonymousInactiveKeep on Squeaking… I am very interested to hear what you find out from the psych… I keep praying for you guys and hope we can get together soon… you have allot on your plate these days.
March 16, 2009 at 9:03 pm #61677AnonymousInactiveHey Jill,
so glad to hear you are getting some anwers. Please keep us posted.
March 17, 2009 at 10:08 am #61689AnonymousInactiveJill, I’m glad that you’re getting some answers. I find that different professionals often say different things so it’s important to get a couple of opinions and go with what feels right to you. I’ve found that more experienced assessors can do a good job in evaluating and often see things that the developmental ped does not. They just can’t diagnose so they’re often telling you things off the record. Even with OT, I’d try to go for an experienced therapist if you can. It really makes a difference. Good luck. I hope that this diagnosis helps you to get him the help that he needs. HUGS.
March 27, 2009 at 7:54 pm #61848AnonymousInactiveWell…back with news from the Psych. They did a full eval and had a team approach as well and their findings are the same as the school board= High Functioning Autism. He goes back next week for another visit with the Psych so we can peice together what we need for Pre-K. This dx does fit the big picture and is def going to offer him the OT services he needs.
Thanks everyone for listening to me…and for all the advice! The squeaky wheel def gets the oil!
March 27, 2009 at 8:03 pm #61849AnonymousInactiveHang in there, Jill! Nice work on getting this all done so fast and so great to get a paper from the docs with an official dx and eval to get him in the pre-k and with what he needs! You are doing fantastic and you will hopefully be amazed at the progress! Dylan has been in the pre k program for 2.5 years before Kindergarten (in K now) and I remember so high and low functioning autistic kids, that I am so amazed at the progress! Some of the high functioning kids, unless someone told you, you would never know!!! Even the low functioning kids it is AMAZING the progress they have made!!! Our district the kids get summer services as well, so that they don’t backslide over the summer. They are offered bus services to and from school during the school year and summer and additional and extended days when necessary.
Hang in there! You are an amazing mommy!!!!! -
