My DS is 11 weeks and has suffered from constant gas pains since about 2-3weeks old. He grunts, squirms, cries until he farts and then begins the whole process again. He also only poops every 3-4 days unless I give him pear juice ( 1 oz diluted with 1oz of water) . We started the pear juice about 2 weeks ago. I have tried gripe water, simethicone…. with very little success. He barely sleeps at night because his farting routine wakes him. During the day, he cries/fusses unless I carry him upright. We live in a small remote city with no access to Specialists. We did see a Pediatrician and he said that my son is probably just colicky and is therefore hyper-sensitive to bodily functions such as farting. He also said it may be silent reflux and prescribed Nexium. I think the only reason he prescribed the Nexium is because my son cried during the entire appointment. Nobody seems to believe me that he only cries when he needs to fart – which is a good part of the day. Could it be silent reflux? Should I try the Nexium?
I should mention that I am breastfeeding and cut dairy out of my diet when this all began.
HELP!!!!
August 6, 2012 at 7:08 pm #70675hellbenntKeymasterhi & welcome!
what are poops like?yellowy/mustardy/seedy breastfed baby poops?if not…read belowReasons a breastfeeding mother might think her baby is reacting to something in her milk:
*poop that is not ‘normal’ mustardy yellow, seedy breastfed baby poop
*mucous in poop; mucous can look like: snot, jelly, cottage cheese, stringy like the inside of a banana
*foul-smelling poop
*stinky, foul-smelling painful gas
*straining and grunting to poop and, when baby finally does poop, it’s soft
the TED (Total Elimination Diet) takes two weeks and then you start adding foods in to see what you CAN eat .
Research all you can! You are your baby’s best advocate!

Great anne post: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=9242August 6, 2012 at 10:32 pm #70679AnonymousInactiveHis poop is not the regular yellow mustardy bf baby poop. It is yellowish-green and it seems a little thick, but not mucousy. It does not have any foul odor. The thickness of his poop may have something to do with the fact that he does not poop regularly. When he does poop, he fills his diaper from one end to the other.
August 7, 2012 at 12:21 am #70680AnonymousInactiveI am so sorry your little one is suffering. 🙁 He sounds a lot like how my boys were when they were little. I want to recommend to you to read my blog. (see signature) What I found to help my children has helped many babies but not all. I think it is something that would be worth a try for you and your baby though. There are many different symptoms and causes for digestive problems but for my children they couldn’t break down the proteins in their food properly because their bodies weren’t making enough digestive enzymes. And this in turn was killing their probiotics (the good live bacteria that coats and protects the entire digestive tract). So by taking a probiotic/enzyme supplement their digestive problems greatly improved.
I hope that you can soon find something that helps.
August 7, 2012 at 8:09 am #70684hellbenntKeymasterHemlock: I’d look at your diet & even try the TED (total elimination diet) to see if gas/disturbance from gas/farts improves…
the TED is only two weeks and you can concentrate on what you CAN eat, rather than what you can’tI did it!once you find your ‘baseline’ – what you can eat where baby’s farts/upset from them has improved, then you can add foods back inyour baby might need nexium, too, but really I would concentrate on your diet. Do you have enough milk to only breastfeed and not add in the formula? (maybe you aren’t adding in formula? It’s hard for me to keep track) Anyway: you can make your milk like an elemental formula and get your baby to not have gas-hang in there!you’ve found a great place!(please try to read the links I gave in the post above, in purple – there’s information there to understand about the diet and how to get to ‘baseline’ and how to add foods back in, etc) -
