February 24, 2010 at 4:28 pm #65911AnonymousInactiveMy daughter had suspected DGE, as well as silent reflux, constipation, and a feeding aversion. She had feeding therapy from 8-16 months of age. She was discharged being able to self feed small amounts of cut up foods, with a limited amount of foods that she would eat (extremely fussy eater), ability to drink soy milk from a sippy cup (in theory, as she rarely did it), and sleep feeding of approximately 16oz of formula a day. She was also on prevacid, 30-42mg daily.
How much prevacid is your son on? What type and how do you give it? What tests did he have done? Has he done feeding therapy? If he has not done feeding therapy, I would say that he needs this based on where he’s at with his feeding. He seems to have delayed oral motor skills and feeding skills, which often go together with a feeding aversion or feeding problems. A feeding evaluation would help you to know what his deficits are, i.e. oral weakness, decreased oral motor control, sensory issues, or a feeding aversion. Then they could direct his therapy to his needs. It’s a long-term solution. But if this helps at all, by age 3, I would say that my dd was almost a normal eater, just very fussy with foods and textures, and was weaned off prevacid. Now at almost age 5, she’s the better of my two eaters and poops on her own without needing miralax.Hang in there.March 5, 2010 at 4:02 pm #65992AnonymousInactiveWe just went for our followup & our doc is afraid my lo is developing/has developed a feeding aversion too. He’s starting on erithro today, and hopefully that will help. He’s on 40-44mg/prilosec w/ buffer babies/ day (when we can get that much in—in addition to fighting the spooon, he fights the syringe now & much of it goes all over the place rather than in his mouth). He will only drink from the bottle right now–he fights (pierces lips/waves arms/cries/turns head) when I try giving him food on a spoon. We are going to start thickening in a few days (giving the erithro a few days to work), but then not sure what to do. Do we stop all attempts at spoon feeding for the time being? When should I push for feeding therapy? Luckily we live near Baltimore, and I believe Johns Hopkins or Kennedy Krieger has a good program, but I really wasn’t thinking it would come to this. We started dealing w/ the reflux on day 3 of his little life & I thought we’d be in good shape right now. Pretty bummed at the moment.

He isn’t fighting/screaming etc, but does not readily open his mouth. I tried singing and making him laugh and was able to get in about 1/2 jar of apple sauce, he doesn’t seem to love it, but doesn’t seem to hate it either! I’m going to keep on just with the apple sauce until he seems more comfy with the whole spoon feeding thing. I also put some on the tray and let him touch it and let him use his own spoon too. I’m going to try to stay calm about it and see how it goes over the next couple of weeks. He’s about 20 pounds and on Neocate.
