Everything was going great until day 5. She began to seem uncomfortable and was crying a lot.
But tonight, it was worse than it has ever been before. She is unconsolable. She won’t eat or sleep. She is coughing, hiccuping, refluxing…I had to leave her crying just to type this. How would I know if she’s reacting to the neocate? Did any of you have a reaction like this?HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
February 14, 2006 at 11:58 pm #1530AnonymousInactiveI did not use Neocate but I can say that the moms on here who have, said that it took up to 2 weeks to notice a change & many times got worse for a short time before it got better. I am sure other moms will chime in.
February 15, 2006 at 1:14 am #1532AnonymousInactiveIt’s 10pm and I finally got my baby to sleep. Tonight she did something she has never done before. She was exhausted, but would not lay her head on my shoulder. Before Neocate, if she was not sleeping because of reflux, she would fall asleep in my arms because she was upright. Tonight, she would lay her head on my shoulder and then jerk it back upright, crying. Eventually she fell asleep with her head completely straight up. I thought and thought about this and realized, I think she if she layed her on my shoulder, she would have difficulty swallowing and it would keep waking her up. So dysphagia. What causes this??
I know it can take up to 2 weeks with Neocate, but it seemed awfully severe tonight. Is it possible for her to react allergically to Neocate?
February 15, 2006 at 1:57 am #1533AnonymousInactiveSome babies can react to Neocate but it is rare. When we started on Elecare the reflux didnt get worse, but took about 6 weeks to show improvement. I have read posts where some babies have been worse before better on Neocate.
Reflux can get worse when babies are ill or teething. Could she be coming down with something or teething?
Also, is she on any solid food? If so, could she have eaten something she reacted too?
February 15, 2006 at 7:07 am #1535AnonymousInactiveI noticed in your signature that she is not on any meds. The neocate is the easiest to digest, but if she is still having reflux issues, the Neocate is not the cure all for that. We did prevacid in combination with Neocate.

February 15, 2006 at 3:15 pm #1574AnonymousInactiveAngie, the behaviour you describe definitely sounds to me like uncontrolled reflux! Reading your post brings tears to my eyes, because my daughter is 8.5 months old, and has being doing the behaviour you describe since she was about 2 months old. You can not lay her head against your shoulder without her arching back as if she is clearing something from her throat, and then thrashing back down again, crying out, whimpering, and her new thing, banging her head repeatedly against your shoulder during a reflux episode. Witnessing these things breaks my heart. I agree with the ladies- you might want to give a PPI another chance. It sounds like she is in pain. I hope that things get better soon.

For most babies Neocate will make a huge improvement but doesnt always cure the reflux completely so meds are still needed.
Hope things are going better.
