Infantreflux.org | Crunching instead of Arching?

Has anyone experienced their little one doing more of a crunch when they’re in pain? He does arch but cries/grunts and crunches forward a lot more. It seems like it would be gas pain but I don’t think it is. He does it when he’s eating and also when I’m trying to get him to sleep. Do you think he’s trying to relieve reflux pain by doing this? He does it so much and seems like he’s in so much pain when he does it.

Yes, my son does that! I’m not sure if it’s due to the gas or reflux.

same here….he seems to do it about 1.5 hrs before he should get more meds so i think its a reflux thing

How old is your lo? Is his development on track? I’m sure it’s nothing, so I don’t want to worry you, but infantile spasms can sometimes present with “jack-knifing”, where they bend at the waist forward. But kids with IS are usually developmentally not on track. I’m only telling you this b/c one mom had a baby who did this, and it was said to be Sandifer’s, when it wasn’t. If you’re at all unsure, then videotape it and show your doctor. It’s probably nothing, but I always think better safe than sorry.

Thanks for the replies! He is 2.5 months and is so far developmentally on track. The thing is, he only does it when we try to get him to sleep. I swear he has some bad association with his room because the second we enter it when trying to get him down, he starts crunching and fussing. I’m thinking maybe he knows he’ll be laying down in there and relates that to pain??

Try raising the head of his crib?

Yes, I do have the head of his crib raised. I’m not sure it makes much of a difference though.
