He may be called a “happy spitter” but Mom is a very unhappy crier.
I nursed my nearly 11 week old son, tried to hold him upright, (that’s hard now as he wants to wiggle and play after he eats) and later had him lie down on the couch with me, like he does sometimes. Likes it b/c he gets to be on his tummy.
He then gushed like Mt. St. Helens. This after having four spit ups during the feed alone. I always end up soaked and having to change clothes after every feed. I keep trying to improve things – I got excited after buying a Mommy Bib thinking it would keep me dry.
By the time my son got done, it was practically dripping and half my shirt was soaked. I had to throw it and the shirt in the washer. Yesterday he spit up so bad I got so frustrated that I took all his clothes off except a diaper and left him in that all afternoon. He kept soaking his outfits. He also soaked the megabib I put on him – the one that says “Spit Happens” on it. We had to wash the cover of his swing – there was a puddle in it!
No parent should have to endure this. I am near the end of my rope. Last night I just cried after getting hosed for the millionth time.
My husband is no help. He says I should just shut up and get over it. Of course he’s at work and so doesn’t get spit up on nearly as much as I do, and since I’m nursing, I’m the one doing all the feeds.
Is there ANYTHING I can do to help alleviate this spit-up? It’s driving me crazy. Before long we will be forced to buy a new washer, it’s so bad. I have tried to use products to help and nothing does. I bought a reflux nursing pillow thinking that would do the trick. Nope. I notice no difference whatsoever. At what age do the spitups start to level off? I need a light at the end of my tunnel.

What causes these forceful spitups? I can understand if he leaks b/c of his immature LES but it’s like someone is down there PUSHING it up.

I do a load of laundry every morning, and for the most part it’s just clothes that Sam and I wore… he’s always just slightly damp from the spit up because it just never ends. I don’t have any advice, just know that you aren’t the only one, we go thru bibs and burp cloths so fast, and average three or four outfits a day for both of us 🙂

I don’t think Myles was as bad as what you’re describing but I was forever scrubbing carpet, washing walls, changing the bed (I fed him in my bed because it’s the only place he’d eat), and of course, doing load, after load, after load of laundry. And like your’s my dh was not very supportive. He had nothing to say but “other mothers do it, so DEAL WITH IT!” I wanted to kick his *ss from here to God know’s where!
The puking was so bad at one point that I decided one night that from now on I was going to feed Myles in the bathtub. I never actually did do that, but it seemed like a great idea in my sleep deprived stupor.
Hang in there. It will get better. For Myles the turn around came at around 8 months and he was pretty much done with it by 9.5 months. Sorry I don’t have any good advice. Just wanted to let you know that I’ve been there and I know how hard it is.

She improved a little at that point, but she still spit up a lot until she was about a year old. We just spread towels everywhere to try to avoid having to wipe up the carpet, and I actually had days when I turned the heat up, left Kaelyn in a diaper, and walked around the house half naked so I would have less clothes to wash.

I’ve gotten to the point that I just let him be in a diaper only most of the day since it’s been summer if we’re at home. Otherwise he never wears one outfit for more than an hour or two. Every time I feed Bryce I lay him on a big bath towel, then if I see him acting like he’s going to spit up, I just try to aim him for the towel. I honestly don’t know of anything that can alleviate the actual spitting up. (I wish I did!!) But I sympathe with you! Good luck, and I hope things ease up for you soon.

My mom also told me I was a huge projectile vomiter as a baby, same stories as yours!! she said I was naked for the first 4 months of my life b/c I was always spraying the walls, but like yours I was a “happy spitter” looking back now my mom and dad joke about it all the time!!! Like ndrose’s son, Myles, Aidan’s reflux started getting MUCH better at 8 months and now at 9 months I believe it’s almost gone. Hang in there things will get better!!!!!!
