Thanks, Lauren. I will try that if I need to! I took Amelia off of yogurt, milk, and cheese yesterday. She didn’t throw up at all and her reflux was MUCH better! I will continue to be a detective… after all, that’s what we are, right ? Is it possible to only be intolerant/allergic to one/a few things? I think she can tolerate cheese, but I am not sure. I will try it today. It seems strange to me. I would think if she’s intolerant/allergic, it would be to all dairy or milk protein. Just trying to make sense of this… If she does turn out to be MSPI or have a milk allergy, should I wean her off of reflux meds? I really hate medicating if I don’t have to. Any thoughts anyone has would be great! Thanks everyone!!!!!
February 22, 2008 at 10:46 am #48495AnonymousInactivei think it is possible to tolerate small amounts and not large amounts of dairy..
and i think you may be able to get her off the meds once you are sure her reflux has calmed down. though, some children need both..it depends i would say on how severe the reflux is??February 22, 2008 at 8:25 pm #48527AnonymousInactiveMary, I agree with Lauren. I have long thought that Ben has a “level” of tolerance.. like he can only handle so much dairy in a day. If he gets too much, then he cant’ handle it.
And to answer your earlier question.. yes, I cut out dairy while breastfeeding. In fact, I was on the TED for several months, so dairy was only one of MANY things I wasn’t eating for a long time. Now, however, I can eat anything, and Ben can handle most dairy… I’ll probably finally try whole milk with him next month. I am STILL breastfeeding, and I’m ready to get my boobs back to myself, you know!February 23, 2008 at 7:12 am #48530AnonymousInactiveThank you Lauren and Naomi! I think that is the case with Amelia, that she can tolerate certain amounts of dairy. It’s either that or she can’t tolerate yogurt. I’m not sure. I never did cut dairy out of my diet. I feel terrible now knowing that she has an intolerance! I could have saved her a lot of suffering in the early days . Naomi, I’m ready to get my boobs back to myself too!!!! How do you plan on quitting? I know Amelia really relaxes with the one before bed and she has come to expect the first one in the moring (not to mention she gets up at 6:00 or sometimes before that and I am not ready to go downstairs and make her breakfast!).
February 23, 2008 at 8:47 pm #48538AnonymousInactiveGreat question. I think I’ll start with the afternoon feedings first, as he is really apathetic about them already.. just give him a sippy of milk, etc.
The morning one will be tough, but I’ll probably just try to have a sippy ready for him first thing. My daughter drinks juice in the morning, and he LOVES a sippy of water with a splash of juice in it. So, it might work to give him a few ounces of the juice water first thing and then milk with his breakfast. That’s what I did with Claire, anyway. The nightime one was the hardest to drop. He really doesn’t drink that much right now, but he loves the snuggle time. So, I’m thinking I’ll do what I did with Claire, and that is to let his dad put him to bed. I’ll still rock and read to him, but then let dad come in with a sippy of milk and let him finish the bedtime ritual. It worked really, really well with Claire, so I’m hoping he will do well too.Best of luck to you! Let me know if you think of a better way. I’m totally open to ideas.February 25, 2008 at 6:17 pm #48594AnonymousInactiveSounds like a good plan, Naomi! I may try the same techniques. I think it will work for my husband to put her to sleep at night. The first one may be the hardest to stop. She did well when I dropped the others, so who knows?
Good luck, and let me know how it goes!
February 25, 2008 at 8:28 pm #48596hellbenntKeymaster(I found the first thing in the morning nursing to be the hardest to drop…It meant I had to actually get up. ugh. But I did and just went right for breakfast and then after maybe a week, I or my husband, could just give him a sippy of milk first thing in the a.m. instead of having to give breakfast right away…I love nursing but I am happy to have my body back…)
February 29, 2008 at 12:01 pm #48724AnonymousInactiveUGH! Amelia spit up again today about an hour and a half after breakfast… no dairy! Very frustrating. She hasn’t thrown up in a week, even when she did have dairy last week. I think she can tolerate hidden dairy, so I did have International Delight Creamer in my coffee yesterday and today (I am still BFing 2 times/day). Also, I am concerned about her getting Vitamin D and fat. I was told not to add anything new to her diet while we are trialing no dairy, and not to quit BFing, so the only fat she is getting is avocado, very little meat fat, breastmilk fat, and I put olive oil on her pasta last night. She is not on any vitamins right now. The trial is supposed to be a week, but after reading many posts, doesn’t a protein take 3-4 weeks to get out of her/my system? Should I be concerned about her lack of fat and Vitamin D?
February 29, 2008 at 2:20 pm #48726AnonymousInactiveI friend of mine gives her son rice milk mixed with coconut milk (very fatty). I think she does a 4:1 ratio. She adds 8 oz. of the coconut milk to 32 oz. of the rice milk at a time. You have to shake the coconut milk before serving because it separates. BUt that might be a good way to get more fats into Amelia.
February 29, 2008 at 5:27 pm #48729hellbenntKeymasteryou can also cook/bake some veggies in oil- there’s avocado oil and of course olive oil…
maybe some sweet potato fries (you could bake them)
or some fried rice (not sure if you do egg/egg yolk)or, I’ve even cooked french toast in oil (again, not sure if you do egg)March 1, 2008 at 8:31 am #48738AnonymousInactiveThanks, Naomi and Laura! I can’t add the coconut oil just yet… the nurse wants me to hold off on adding anything new during the trial so we don’t get confused about what the true intolerance (if there is one) is. But, it’s good to know for future reference!
UGH! Amelia spit up again today directly after breakfast (she had just finished)! I am confused and frustrated! Could it be the quantity of foods I’m feeding her? Something I ate last night? For breakfast she had regular oatmeal mixed with a little baby oatmeal cereal and pureed pears and raspberries mixed in too. She also had banana and water. I breastfed her 2 hours earlier. I just don’t know what to think!March 1, 2008 at 8:34 am #48739hellbenntKeymasterdoes the baby oatmeal have milk or soy? hmm….
not sure what to say…March 1, 2008 at 9:42 am #48741AnonymousInactiveNo, the ingredient list for Earth’s Best Oatmeal cereal is Organic Whole Oat Flour, Organic Rolled Oats, Tocopherols (Vitamin E), alpha-Amylase (Enzyme), Electrolytic Iron.
Oh, I forgot, she had toast with nothing on it for breakfast too. It may have soy, I’ll have to check. She has been eating that same bread for months, and the spitting up just started a few weeks ago. I thought it was the yogurt, so we stopped that and now all dairy. She has had some days with no spitting up, but now it’s starting again. One of her molars just broke through. Maybe that’s it??? Just don’t know what to think.March 1, 2008 at 9:26 pm #48750AnonymousInactiveit could be the bread.. soy…dairy in it? maybe even the wheat?
does she have any other signs of intolerances? how is her poo? any excema?and it def. could be teething.. shane was MUCH worse while he was teething.I hope it calms back down!March 2, 2008 at 7:25 am #48752AnonymousInactiveI checked the bread, no dairy or soy, however I haven’t omitted soy from our diets so maybe that’s it??? I think it’s probably best to eliminate one thing at a time so you know which one it is or if it’s both milk and soy. This is really hard to figure out.
I guess it could be the teething, but she’s been spitting up after breakfast almost exclusively. She refluxes throughout the day, but she vomits after breakfast. She does have excema on her face, more on one cheek than the other. I am hesitant to put Aquaphor or anything on it so that I can determine when it gets worse with food. Thanks for all your help, everyone. I still just don’t know what to think… -
