Joel, I know that you have said repeatedly that the amount of sodium bicarb has to be sufficient to buffer the stomach acid to protect the drug (when compounded). My question is, what if the compound is protected, but the baby doesn’t take the whole 3.5ml? Will all of the drug be destroyed because there won’t be enough buffer to protect it, or will only some of it be destroyed. I have not been able to get the whole amount into her lately.
Also, our compound pharmacy claims that they can formulate a suppository form of the drug. Does this sound like it might even be feasible for it to work? Would there have to be certain amounts of buffer again, or would you have to eat at a certain amount of time following when it was absorbed even though it doesn’t go through the stomach? Any ideas?
I just wanted to add one more question… I know that there’s a brief period (a few days up to a few weeks) until a PPI reaches full effectiveness. What happens if you stop taking the medicine cold turkey. Does it take a while for the stomach to start producing acid again, or do you notice a difference right away. Hailey has not had any meds for 2 days (since she won’t take them or keep them in).
