Milk of Magnesia doesn’t have milk in it…. it’s magnesium hydroxide (or something like that) which is laxative, and water, and one other ingredient that I can’t remember. They probably use the word milk because it’s a creamy white.

March 14, 2007 at 8:50 pm #27510AnonymousInactiveWe’re kind of having a constipation issue with Dagney now too… Well, it’s not so much a constipation issue, but her poops are much firmer now and she seems to be having a tougher time going now. I was giving her several doses of Mylanta every day for a while because of all her reflux issues (along with the prevacid & neocate w/ rice cereal). I’ve cut out the Mylanta because she doesn’t seem to need it anymore, but now her poops are firmer. I’m still thickening her formula with the rice cereal, but I’m trying to cut back, but she still gets about 5Tablespoons per 8 ounce bottle. I have her on oatmeal by spoon rather than rice cereal, and she started sweet potatoes yesterday. Does anyone have any suggestions to help her out a little? I’d rather not give Mylanta if she doesn’t need it, and I tried a little prune juice a couple of moinths ago, but that didn’t seem to help her at all. I’m going to add another post to the feeding category, as I have questions about the rice cereal & how to “count” that into her diet…
Thanks!!

What about the sweet potatoes does it to them? We’re going to start green beans tomorrow in place of them, but I may also add some prunes or give her one of those other remedies!

i would suggest oatmeal in bottles instead of rice, thats what we have to do now since starting prevacid. also, i would sometimes put a teaspoon of gerber stage one prunes in the bottle.
if she is still having problems you can try benefiber, or even karo syrup.
March 17, 2007 at 7:49 pm #27698AnonymousInactiveI agree with Natalia…oatmeal would probably be better. Rice is so binding. Also, prunes in the bottle is a good idea. I used to put about one tablespoon in two of Myles’ bottles each day and it definitely helped. As he got older I increased the amount to 1/2 a stage one container each day.
We also used benefiber with success.
Sweet potatoes were one of those foods that Myles could only have twice per week or so. Too much would bind him up. I think it’s because they are a starchy vegetable and starches tend to be binding for some people. Once he was on a daily regimen of natural remedies for constipation (pear juice, prunes, flax seed oil and benefiber daily) I could give him sweet potatoes a few times a week without problems.

I’m looking into other alternatives to the rice cereal now, I was going to post a thread about Simply Thick to see what people thought about that, I know people have mentioned that they used it in the past, but I really don’t know much about it or how it works. I tried pulling back on the rice cereal in bottles (I’m putting in slightly more than half of what I was using), but she’s now started spitting up again since I’ve done that, so it looks like she still needs something to weigh it down. I’d really rather her not have all those extra calories from the cereal in the bottles–she’s thriving as it is & I don’t want to encourage or cause a weight problem because of it. Any ideas about that would be appreciated too!!
I gave her about 1/3 of a stage 1 prunes for breakfast with her oatmeal, and it did the trick almost immediately! She had a nice good poop! My question is, since it’s the first time she’s had that, should I count that as her “new food” for these few days, and not give her anything else, or can I go ahead and still give her green beans today as well?

is she in pain? maybe spitting up is ok? just a thought, I really don’t know
March 18, 2007 at 1:09 pm #27744AnonymousInactiveShe’s not in pain, but she has been kind of cranky for the last week or 2, i thinkn that started before the sweet potatoes though. I think the crankiness may be from not pooping so well…
It’s just been so nice over the last few weeks without her spitting up so much, that I hate going back to it! We went to church last evening, and she spit up all over me 3 times, and a little on my husband. I was the big mess in the end, she went home and got a bath though!
March 18, 2007 at 9:11 pm #27782AnonymousInactiveI think I’d wait a couple of days before starting green beans. She’ll probably be fine with prunes but if she has any kind of reaction you won’t know if it was the prunes or the green beans. I’m glad the prunes seem to be working.
I’m not sure what I’d do about the thickening. It didn’t work for Myles. He threw up anything! So, I didn’t have to make that decision.
Simply Thick has a website if you want to read up on it. http://www.simplythick.com
March 18, 2007 at 9:25 pm #27786AnonymousInactiveThanks, Christine! Was Myles also on Neocate? I don’t think the rice ceral ever really helped Dagney much either, she was throwing up all the time–maybe a little less– until a few weeks ago, when the wonderful few weeks of virtually vomit-less-ness was here! It was so nice while it lasted! Now she’s spitting up again, and sometimes it’s ORANGE from the sweet potatoes!! I’m just worried now that she’d hate the taste of the Neocate without the rice cereal and not want to drink it, but she’ll probably get used to it eventually! I think I just may wean her off the ceral by about 1/2- 1 T per bottle per day and see how it goes. Pretty much everything with these little ones seems to be trial and error anyway!
