yeah, i wonder if the prevacid did it. he went from diarhea to major constipation.
January 1, 2007 at 12:34 pm #21467AnonymousInactiveoh no, he just pushed out a really hard piece again and is crying. he is still constipated! i cant believe this Chrisitne! it has to be the prevacid, he never had problems like this. i would have known he was still constipated i would have given him oatmeal in his bottle this morning instead of rice. grrr. i guess from now i on that he is on prevacid i have to motify his diet.
what can i give him today that will work the quickest for constipation? ive seen a little remedies brand of liquid laxative medicine at walmart but im not sure if its good for infants, i think i remember the box said “under 2 ask a doctor” . have you used that before?
gosh i just want him to not feel like crap already!January 1, 2007 at 1:02 pm #21468AnonymousInactiveI’d quickly switch to oatmeal like you said. Maybe try some benefiber. This works very well for Myles. It’s a powder. You can add it to anything and it’s tasteless, odorless and not gritty. He won’t even notice it so you can put it in his bottle. I gave Myles about 1/4 – 1/2 teaspoon at 10 ish months. I think that would be fine for Trace, but you can start with a little less if you’re worried.
You’ll probably have to start giving him some prunes or pears daily, (or prune juice / pear juice). If I missed even one day with Myles he’d be constipated. That’s what I mean when I said I had to be proactive with him. I had it down to a science.
Flax seed oil is great for softening the stools. I give Myles 1 tsp a day by spoon, or add it to his cereal.
So, that’s what I gave Myles daily: prunes, diluted pear juice, flax seed oil, and benefiber. I used to give him fiber juice http://www.fiberjuice.com and that was very helpful as well, but I think benefiber is just as good.
I hope he doesn’t get severely consitpated again this time. Try the benefiber and maybe the brown sugar and warm water. That used to do the trick for Myles many times.
January 1, 2007 at 1:10 pm #21469AnonymousInactiveare benefiber and flaxeed safe for 7 month old? maybe i will pick some up today.
January 1, 2007 at 1:20 pm #21470AnonymousInactivealso, do you think pear juice will help, because i looked at the nutrition info, and there is no fiber in it. weird.
January 1, 2007 at 1:53 pm #21474AnonymousInactiveWell, one of the moms here said they used Benefiber in the neonatal unit for preemies, so that’s what sold me on it. It’s just fiber, not a drug or anything. Myles has never had any adverse reaction to it and it does seem to help him. I still give it to him 4 or 5 times per week.
I’m sure flaxseed oil is safe. I’ve been giving it to all of my kids since they were 8 or 9 months old; Myles since probably six months becasue of his constipation issues.
As for Pear juice I didn’t realize it didn’t have any fiber in it. That’s weird. Maybe the reason it helped Myles is that it increased his fluid intake overall. I did notice that prunes worked better than prune juice, so I used to put a tablespoon of prunes in his bottle. It would dissolve and he didn’t seem to mind the taste. I still give him prunes every morning in his oatmeal.
Myles had severe constipation due to a variety of issues….Prevacid, DGE and a lack of fluid intake because he gave up the bottle at 7 months and was strictly spoon fed. So, he really needed all of these remedies to stay regular. Since Trace only seems to be having this problem due to Prevacid, hopefully it won’t be as bad for him and just one or two of these remedies will help him.
January 1, 2007 at 2:26 pm #21475AnonymousInactivethank you!
i talked to his doc again and she said i can give him some miralax which i have here. she also suggested prunes and oatmeal after he gets cleaned out to stay regular.January 1, 2007 at 2:32 pm #21476AnonymousInactiveOh, good. I forgot about Miralax. I think Thais (matthew’s mom) usually recommends that. I hope it helps.
The prunes and oatmeal sounds like a good plan.
You’re a great mom!
January 1, 2007 at 5:17 pm #21490AnonymousInactivei just went to two stores, walmart and osco and neither have infant prune juice. the only thing i found was gerber makes an “apple/prune” mixture. should i use adult prune juice? or should i try that apple prune?
January 1, 2007 at 5:24 pm #21491AnonymousInactiveYou can just use normal prune juice. That’s what our dietitian recommended for us to use when Bryce was only 3 months old. It worked really well. It can cramp their tummies sometimes though, so watch for that. Hope it helps!
January 1, 2007 at 5:54 pm #21492AnonymousInactivethats what i used when he was 3 months old and he had tummy aches. i thought maybe now since he is older i could try it, but i thoght i could find an infant kind, i guess they dont make one though. weird.
January 1, 2007 at 6:08 pm #21493AnonymousInactiveYeah, I haven’t seen an infant kind either. You might try diluting it. Hopefully it won’t bother him now that he’s older. Pear juice works just as well though, and it’s a lot easier on their tummies. Not sure how it works, but it does!

yeah thats what i hear, but it has no fiber so im confused by that
January 1, 2007 at 7:42 pm #21495AnonymousInactiveI’m not sure exactly how pear juice works, but it’s not a fiber thing. It just causes more fluid to be retained in the intestines somehow. I think it works the same way that Karo syrup does, but it’s a little healthier.
January 1, 2007 at 8:05 pm #21496AnonymousInactiveAidan’s ped told me to give him one ounce of prune juice diluted in about 3 oz or so of water (but he was much younger at the time, maybe 3-4 months old). Can they give lactulose? My nephew was on it at around 9 months old for constipation, and he is on it again at 2. Thye supositories didn’t even work for him (nothing does except the lactulose). Also, I have a friend with a 3 year old who swears by probiotics for things like constipation, etc.
