Hi all…
We’ve been on neocate for a month now.
It took this long for my daughters tummy to finally settle. SOO thankful for that! However, this entire time she has struggled with clear drainage.
She’s been sleeping in her bouncy this whole time, otherwise she wakes frequently with a full nose. Soo…the mornings are filled with a phlegmy throat. It’s so awful sounding. I already took her to the ped as I was suspecting an ear infection, but they were clear. She said perhaps it’s just a virus that will eventually clear. Ugh…it’s been a month now. She’s also really not refluxing much anymore which is great – so I don’t think that is causing it.
Anyone else have trouble w/ neocate phlegm? I consider this formula a poor excuse for food – I’d have phlegm too if I had to drink it – but – we have no choice right now as this is all she will tolerate.
Thank you for any advice!

is baby drinking neocate only? anything else?March 21, 2011 at 7:40 pm #68037AnonymousInactiveOh..no worries, Laura! I figured perhaps you and others just might not know. She isn’t on anything else but the prevacid capsules and this week I started giving her a wee bit of avocado which she loves. If anything, I feel like a little bit of real food might help her.
I just think it’s weird that it started the week she started the neocate. First I thought it was just a lot of reflux and the vomiting that first week – that it all just got into her passageways ect. But – her reflux is way better now as well as her insides, thank goodness.
Just wish I could get this awful phlegm figured out. A month of it! I really feel like it’s the sugar and crud in the formula. Not sure I’ll ever get over having to feed it to her. I might not feel so badly if she didn’t have neutropenia – low immunity/white blood cell count. Poor babe needs breastmilk and I can’t give it to her. This infant stage has been a difficult one over our way!angie c2011-03-21 19:42:40

I’m desperate to help her – she has been sleeping upright for months and the pressure in her ears/sinuses is so disheartening. I’m suspecting yet another ear infection of which we are getting checked out today. This will be chronic until neocate is no more.
What would you all do? Neocate is a last resort – I have no idea what to do. I do not feel Elecare is the answer b/c it’s basically all corn syrup as well and she absolutely cannot tolerate it.
I’ve looked into a rice formula but am hesitant, of course, b/c it would most likely not be complete.
At almost 7 months, this is no way to live – this poor baby! I wish there were something else out there. Do we really have to give this to her until she is a year old? I desperately want to wean her early – even at 10 months. Even 3 months more of this sounds like a nightmare – but we need a goal. We’ve asked her ped and he says the GI benefits outweigh the phlegm issues – i get that – but she is so uncomfortable.
Any thoughts? It isn’t reflux – that is under control – I know that causes congestion – this is different.

I think alimentum RTF doesn’t have corn? maybe do a trial of that?
if trial fails, do another at 9 months then 11 months & then you’re almost there?
I did a search- angie it’s an old post of yours:

When we were checking our children for celiac disease—we discovered that one of our children is IgA deficient—he is missing the part of the immune system that protects a person from their nose and mouth all the way through their intestinal tract to the rectum. It seemed like my son would have a cold all winter long—i figured he had allergies—we had allergy testing done–and he didn’t show a single allergy—then we later learned about the IgA deficiency—I think he DID have cold all winter long—he also had tons of ear infections. just something to consider.
