Hello, my LO 12 weeks old tomorrow has had quite the ordeal. BUT he was just diagnosed with silent reflux (GERD) and put on zantac. PED suggested putting 1TB spoon cereal per 4oz in a bottle. He was using Dr. Browns and AVENT bottles level 1 nipple prior to cereal. It gets clogged on level 2 as well and level 3 is too fast. We tried veriflow nipples they are too fast and i’ve gone through like 8 nipples trying to make the hole myself. I can’t get him to eat anymore than he would prior to being on medication because he chokes on the flow of formula/cereal. Any suggestions?
if your baby seems to be choking, I would DEMAND a Swallow Study.
This looks at the mechanics of swallowing and also checks for aspiration when swallowing. Then, after the study IF there is a need to thicken, you are told a specific consistancy with a thickening agent- not cereal.
As I re-read you post, the choking seems to be from the cereal.
Stop the cereal. let the meds do their thing.
PLEASE RESEARCH all you can!
I have a LOT to say and most of it’s here, in a link called ‘groupie intro.‘ it’s loOooong but TRULY will help you- read through it, refer back to it, scroll through it/skim through it. You’ll find yourself coming back to it! https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=853
