Ok, so w/ all these C-Diff posts it got me wondering. I looked at some older posts to try to find answers but still had questions.
How would I know if this is Evan’s problem? He’s had green, mucousy stools pretty much most of his life (got a bit worse around 2-3 weeks old). And since he’s breastfed what’s the definition of diarrhea?
Also strains a lot & seems to have stomach cramps @ times. I’m currently doing TED(day 11) w/ little to no improvement w/ the mucous/blood.As I was sitting here thinking about it… Evan’s never been on antibiotics (but I was when he was 1-2wks old), but then I realized that we were in the ER w/ him @ 2.5wks old. The green, mucousy stools got worse within 2-3 days after that & have been that way since. I know it’s transmitted @ hospitals often.erinntx 2008-07-09 19:05:17 July 9, 2008 at 7:42 pm #53633hellbenntKeymasterJuly 9, 2008 at 8:21 pm #53635AnonymousInactivec-diff has a very noticable odor to it… it really stinks so that would be a good clue.
July 9, 2008 at 8:24 pm #53636AnonymousInactiveYes, his diapers & gas are super stinky.
July 11, 2008 at 3:03 pm #53746AnonymousInactiveHi there. It is really easy to test for, assuming you can gather some of his stool into a cup. Your ped can order the lab test. He probably hasn’t thought of it, because it isn’t common for babies to get sick from it. I would demand it! If he does have it (and I pray he doesn’t) you want to know. As far as the antibiotics go, my son has never been on antibiotics, neither has the other baby on this site who has C-Diff. Symptoms are as stated above…cramping, and really stinky distinctive diarrhea. My sons is bright yellow, with little yellow soft seed-like stuff in it. And then some stools are yellowish and mucousy.
July 11, 2008 at 3:09 pm #53747AnonymousInactiveThank you for your response. We see the ped GI on Tuesday. I mentioned C-Diff on my general ped’s nurses line the other day but when ped called back he just emphasized that he wanted us seen by our ped GI asap. I forgot to ask again about C-Diff. There is plenty of mucousy stuff that could be gathered into a cup. Our ped GI appt is an hr away so should I take a diaper just in case he doesn’t go while we’re there? (not likely, but would be our luck). We live in FL so that will be fun trying to “preserve” the diaper on the car ride up-lol. Anyway, thanks again & I hope your LO is on the path to better things. I’ve followed your posts (dating back a while) & you have not had it easy .

As far as the diapers goes, I’ve been told it has to be fresh…like within an hour. My GI always gives me a script that I jut take to the Lab here where I live. MY ped GI is an hour away also. Good luck to you too! I really pray your LO doesn’t have C-Diff…it’s nasty. But then again…at least then you would know something. Hugs.
July 11, 2008 at 3:40 pm #53750AnonymousInactiveWe had to collect my son’s bm’s frequently when he was about 3 months old. It was a pain in the neck, but actually became “easy” eventually. The lab collection bag has an opening and wide adhesive “collar” and you just stick it on his bottom around the anus and enclose the whole bag inside his diaper. And then wait for the bm to come…hopefully soon! We had to get the stool sample back to the ped relatively quickly also. Maybe you could ask your GI if you could refrigerate the stool sample to preserve it???
BTW, I hope he doesn’t have C-Diff, but I certainly understand your desire to know what is going on!!!July 12, 2008 at 9:27 pm #53803AnonymousInactiveI would think that would more than lickly be a MSPI than C-Diff. The kids who are the most suspetable for C-Diff are kids like Jedd who are on a ABX all the time. Other than that your chances of getting and contracting C-Diff are pretty small. JMHO….when ever your child goes on an ABX you can do an OTC pribiotic to hlep keep C-Diff at bay. We do yougurt ALOT to help Jedd outr and he has NEVER gottne Cdiff. and he has been on erythromycin for over a year 4X;s a day. See how rare it is…

sorry, just saw your response. We live in Sarasota. Our Ped GI is w/ All Children’s Hospital in St. Pete. He comes to the Sarasota All Children’s satellite office 1x/wk but since ped wanted us to see him asap we’re going to the St. Pete office. Thanks for all the info. I surely hope he doesn’t have C-Diff also, but it would give us answers.Where are you?July 15, 2008 at 5:07 pm #54014AnonymousInactiveYou had your app today right? Any new news?
July 15, 2008 at 6:51 pm #54015AnonymousInactiveYes & no.
We will continue what we’re doing now (TED) for another week + add enzymes. If still no change then we will do endoscopy + biopsy. I asked about C-Diff & he said they would check for it (as well as auto-immune disorder among other things) when/if we end up doing endoscopy. He also said he had only seen 2 cases in infants & they were 4 mths old. I know your little guy was around 2mths old (if I remember correctly). He pooped while we were there (also when the nurse practitioner did the rectal exam ) so they could have taken a sample (for C-diff testing) if he was really concerned about it… I think he’s not worried about it but we’ll see. Thanks for asking! -
