Well, after some wonderfully helpful responses to my last question and some research on my own, I want to try using Caracream with the Prevacid I give my son. Unfortunately, I have a problem…my husband refuses to allow it. He doesn’t want to do anything the doctor doesn’t suggest, he doesn’t know what’s in the CC and he says it’s not FDA approved?
Grrrr…does anyone know what it actually is exactly? The words “buffer” or “sweetener” aren’t cutting it with him. And if you’ve used it, did your ped GIs approve it or do you do it without telling them? I have a feeling my ped GI will say she’s never heard of it.
Thanks!

Ingredients in BB:
Side B: Dicalcium phosphate, guar gum
Side A: Sugar from cane, flavors, guar gum, sodium bicarbonate, micronized calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate
ingredients of Packet A has 45% Calcium phosphate ,30% Calcium carbonate, 20% sodium bicarbonate, 5% dicalcium phosphateStill wondering how your ped GI docs react to the idea of CC or BB?

Our ped GI listened to us, read something we had printed from their site & gave the go-ahead…

You can simply have your doc write you a script for Zegerid powder packs. It’s the same thing but it will come from the pharmacy. A little expensive. Also the best compounding pharmacies compound their prilosec liquid with sodium bi carbonate. You can have them make it if the Zegerid powder packs are too expensive with your insurance.

July 27, 2011 at 5:08 pm #68722hellbenntKeymasterI would NOT get it compounded at the pharmacy, unless you TELL them HOW to do it- the instructions are found in Prevacid 101…
Prevacid 101- scroll to the last page of this post, (it’s actually also about other PPIs like prilosec, too)

August 8, 2011 at 9:42 am #68804AnonymousInactiveWell, we received our Caracream and I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to make. But….my LO had horrible gas the last two nights and slept way worse than ever. He wasn’t actually passing that much gas, but I could feel/hear all these bubbles rumbling around in his stomach. So, after 2 nights of horrible sleep I’m ready to give up on Caracream. Is there any chance the gas improves with time? Not sure why it would….but I’m hoping. Thanks!
August 8, 2011 at 9:53 am #68805hellbenntKeymastergive it two weeks
for some reason, everything takes two weeks…also: email dr philips w/ your question about the gas?I have read that it clears up though…August 8, 2011 at 11:21 am #68807AnonymousInactiveYes, the gas will pass. That is the warning they give you when you start using it. Should have been with your paperwork or perhaps it is just on the retail site. http://www.refluxsolutions.com. Hang in there. He body is learning how to process food with less acid in his stomach.. and less acid is exactly what you are going for. He will work through this. Warm tummy wraps and Mylacon drops will get you through. It can last for 7 days but should start getting better after 4.
August 11, 2011 at 7:13 am #68844AnonymousInactiveHi, my lo is on day 6 of bufferbabies with generic omeprazole and the gas was bad the first two days. His system is getting the hang of it, good point mentioned above about the body getting used to digesting food without the same level of acid. My ped. gi said that there are multiple systems involved with digestion, that the tummy acid is just one part, and the body compensates when it is reduced. He is already eating better. How is your little one doing now? Did you stick with it? I also read the warning on the instructions and good thing because I would have thought something was wrong.
