I’m kind of late to this, but I’m SO excited about this stuff!!! Prevacid that I can make into a liquid that doesn’t have to be timed around meals — it’s like the holy grail of reflux meds to me 🙂 Not so much for Nathan since he’s fine with the capsules in applesauce, and we’ll be starting the weaning process soon anyway, but if and when we have another reflux baby, this sounds great!
Erin, please let us know how it goes 🙂July 14, 2008 at 10:14 am #53872AnonymousInactiveFirst of all, I just want to say THANK YOU for not only this post, but for this forum and all the wonderful people. I have learned so much from reading everything and just registered today. My 6 week old, Rachel, has had reflux since 2 weeks old, and we have been trying to find the best combination of everything for her. She is currently on Neocate, which seems to be working great. But the Prevacid solutabs we give her have not been so great. Of course, it’s only been 11 days, and I know it can take a week, but I really feel like we lose alot of the “beads” when I try to give it to her, and timing it around meals is hard with a 6 week old.
Anyway, I was so excited to read this post. I have already emailed David and requested the CaraCream. I also left a message with Rachel’s doctor to see if they can call in the capsules. So here is the question. She is on 15mg total, split to 7.5 twice a day. How exactly do you do this with the CaraCream? I read the explanation but I think I am missing something. Is it done daily and then split, or do you make a suspension for a weeks worth or something? How do you know the dose you are giving, just give half the daily suspension?Sorry for all the questions, I am just pretty excited, as I heard of great success with this, and I am finally getting somewhat releived that there might be light at the end of the tunnel. Thanks,TanyaJuly 14, 2008 at 1:28 pm #53880hellbenntKeymasteryou’ll get specific instrucitons when it comes. but basically you make a week’s worth I think it is
welcome & please post in other forums so we can all properly welcome you!July 14, 2008 at 1:31 pm #53882AnonymousInactiveYes, the directions were super specific to Evan’s dosage, etc. Super easy!!
In our case, it made almost 11 days worth:-16 capsules were what we were instructed to use-each capsule is 15mg-he gets 22.5mg/day (so uses 1.5 capsules/day)July 14, 2008 at 1:33 pm #53883hellbenntKeymasterI just added to the post on the previous page (because I keep giving the link to folks, LOL!)
that if baby isn’t on PROPER DOSE then all the caracream in the world will not help… so http://www.marci-kids.com will help you determine PROPER DOSE for each babyJuly 14, 2008 at 4:50 pm #53924AnonymousInactiveone more question – so if a child is on the solutabs now and we switch to the capsules in CaraCream, is there a “waiting” period for it to work again, or no, because the Prevacid is already built up in the system?
July 14, 2008 at 5:03 pm #53929AnonymousInactivethe 1st day we switched to capsules was rough, but I think it was just a coincidence. 2nd day + were fine.
July 16, 2008 at 3:28 pm #54058AnonymousInactiveJust checking in. For those using CaraCream, how is everyone doing? Do you like it better than however you were dosing the Prevacid before? Are your little ones taking it without a problem? Is it more convenient to not have to time with meals and waiting? Hope to hear good news:) Mine is shipping today!
TanyaJuly 16, 2008 at 3:31 pm #54059AnonymousInactiveI have nothing but good things to say. I LOVE it! It’s so much easier than all the other ways we tried (compounded, solutabs & capsules w/ applesaucs) & the fact that it doesn’t have to be timed around feedings is icing on the cake! Evan takes it ok (taste-wise), but it is a lot to give him (5mL) so it takes some patience since it takes a while… we only give him tiny squirts @ a time (< .5mL) b/c we are scared to death of him spitting it out & “losing” the med!
July 21, 2008 at 8:54 pm #54273AnonymousInactiveErin – quick question. We are on a 7.5mg twice a day dose. We got our CaraCream and instructions today and it says to give 3.75ml twice per day, which translates to our dose. You mentioned that you give 5ml at a time, and I thought I read you were giving 7.5 three times per day. So I was just wondering why our mls were different. Are you only doing it twice a day now?
Thanks, sorry if my question is confusing.July 21, 2008 at 9:28 pm #54277AnonymousInactiveWe give 5mL for the 15mg dose & 2.5mL for the 7.5mg dose. We do 7.5mg in a.m. & 15mg in the p.m. (we used to do 7.5mg 3x/day but it got easier to just do 2 doses w/ a big one @ night… we actually bumped up to 15mg & 15mg today after our ped appt). I don’t know why our mL are diff’t. How many capsules do you add? We add 16 so it makes a 3mg/mL suspension. What is your mg/mL suspension?!
July 21, 2008 at 9:43 pm #54278AnonymousInactiveWe add 10 capsules to make a 2 mg/ml suspension.
July 21, 2008 at 9:52 pm #54279AnonymousInactiveThat makes sense then 🙂
September 13, 2008 at 10:22 pm #56547AnonymousInactiveHi – thanks so much for all the info you’ve provided. I have a question and am hopeful you may know the answer. Since the caracream with prevacid would eliminate the need for special timing with meals, does that mean that the suspension version of Prevacid (since it is compounded – and our pharmacist plans to compound it using the capsules) would also eliminate that need for the timing?
Thanks in advance!September 13, 2008 at 10:29 pm #56548hellbenntKeymasteryes….BUT. it is fairly hard to find a pharmacist to compound the prevacid
PROPERLY. many have found pharmacists who assure everyone that they are indeed compounding it correctly, yet parents find that the effectiveness of the compound wears off- that it is not ‘stable.’ If you want to go the route of asking your pharmacist to compound the prevacid for you rather than using (tried & true) caracream, then I would TELL pharmacist to please ‘humour’ you and to make it EXACTLY this way:compounding from lori: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=7855&TPN=1
I would also recommend you read further about compounding here, where there is great discussion as to how/why etc compounds done by (most) pharmacists are not stable: Prevacid 101(last post on the page): https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1936&PN=0&TPN=1
