October 27, 2007 at 11:21 am #44707AnonymousInactiveWell, we are still on Nutramagin with the solutabs. her reflux is worse than it’s ever been, but she’s a happier baby…she’s not constipated all the time. So it’s a double edged sword. ‘
We got into see a GI and boy was that a waste! He basically looked at her…said she’s thriving and he wasn’t going to do anything…no tests no nothing. UGH! We’re doing the best we can. I asked the doc about perscription formula because I have read some babies who have a high intolerance to milk have a problem with even Nutramagin, and she said it was highly unlikly and to stick with the meds and Nutramagin. He said her reflux was worse on this because it’s partially digested and she’s got to get use to it…blah blah
But, on this formula, she burps ALL the time!!! HOURS after she eats and well of course some of her food comes up, but sometimes it’s just gas. So I burp her every 1 oz…sometimes half an ounce, but geez… I added mylacon to her food and it has seemed to help her comfort, but she’s passing ADULT like gas out the back end now too. Tried different bottles…nothing. The gas out the back end is as bad as it was on the SOY milk, but not as painful (because of the constipation). IS this normal? Does anyone else’s child burp so much so often?? And has THAT much gas???

She swallowed tons of air when she ate and she needed to burp after every 1/2 to one ounce. It was frustrating, but she outgrew it when she outgrew her reflux. I guess there must be a connection.
My son had the opposite problem. He too had reflux (not silent) and he needed to burp after every 1/2 to one ounce too. The problem with him was that he couldn’t burp as much as he needed to. It was awful. Mylicon before feedings often helped him though. So, I guess what I am saying is that it’s good that she is able to burp, though I know it’s frustrating that she needs to so often. One thing you could try is a different bottle, or different nipple. Sometimes they swallow a lot of air while feeding because they don’t make a tight enough seal around the nipple with their mouth. My kids (even my non-refluxer) did the worst with the Avent nipples and they did best with the Dr. Brown’s. Just something to think about…. Also lots of crying before feedings will cause them to swallow tons of air, as will sucking on a pacifier.I wouldn’t worry about the tooting and the smell. My son always smelled like he had dirty pants, but it was just gas. Again, as long as she’s passing it, she’s probably fine. For my son the constant gas (and smell) was probably due to the fact that he had DGE (delayed gastric emptying) and constipation. Once I got his constipation under control the chronic smelly gas subsided. You say her reflux is worse, but she’s happier. Do you mean the burping and spitting is worse? Sometimes they spit more once they are on meds because it doesn’t hurt anymore, so it may be a good thing. If she’s happier, that’s great!October 27, 2007 at 5:38 pm #44710AnonymousInactiveWell, she was spitting up more on this milk before the meds…hence the reason for the medication for sure. What I mean by adult like gas is not the smell, but the intensity coming out of her. It’s like LARGE gas bubbles. She does suck on that paci a lot so that could be another thing.
I say she’s happier because she doesn’t seem in pain like she did on the soy. I think she’s not cramping up as much because she may have had an intolerance to the soy too (not as much as the milk) but some. When I add the Mylacon, she doesn’t seem to want to burp as much, but later she’ll burp within the hour. It’s hard when we’re traveling that she has to burp so much because I havve to take her out. It’s just weird. How did you get his constipation under control? I think the Mylacon is helping constipate her.ETA: I’m trying the Dr Brown’s bottles. They have a different gimmic…Its the only bottle I haven’t tried. LOL. Whatever works right? My DH says that he’s got enough baby stuff to open his own store.HeathJS282007-10-27 18:19:33

Re: the constipation. My son had DGE which is probably why he was constipated. Also Prevacid can cause consitpation. I got it under control for him by giving him several natural remedies daily. Flax seed oil (1 teaspoon per day by spoon). Prunes (1/2 of a stage one container daily). Pear juice (1 ounce daily), and Benefiber (1/4 – 1/2 of a teaspoon daily added to his oatmeal or bottle). I’m not sure how old your baby is….she may be too young for prunes or pears, but the other remedies should be fine for even a newborn. (They use all kinds of oils to make baby formula. A mom on the board has seen Benefiber used for preemies in the NICU).Good luck. -
