Good Afternoon,
Wow…its been a long time since I posted in this section, but I surely feel horrible today. I feel like we have taken two huge giant steps backwards….
There are a lot of new people here that may not know us…but my son, Brennan, now 19 months, had very severe reflux as an infant. Like many of you, we went through so much with him, I wont bore you with the details, but in a nutshell….we thought he was over his reflux. We successfully weaned him at about 12 months from his high dose of Prevacid….
Brennan also has all the malacia’s, tracheomalacia, laryngomalacia, and bronchomalasia. He has consistent atelectasis in the lower left lobe and he coughs every morning upon waking and every night when he goes to bed. He also coughs when he is on his back while sleeping. We went to see his Ped Pulmonologist today and he believes that Brennan is still refluxing and aspirating. So….he put him back on Prevacid.
I know this isnt a big deal, but to me I feel like its a step backwards. Every time we are able to put something behind us, I feel joyous, as I did with reflux…or so I thought.
So, now the question comes into play….do we go back with Prevacid packets or do solutabs. He wrote a script for solutabs but told me to call if I wanted the packets. For those with older babies and toddlers on Prevacid…what do you use?
Thanks for listening.

sympathies anyway. I’m sorry that Brennan has to go back on Prevacid
but am glad that they at least are acting to make him feel better. As for form of Prevacid, I don’t know personally, but have heard that many older babies do better with the Solutabs?
February 24, 2006 at 3:37 pm #2373AnonymousInactiveOh Deb, what a bummer. I hope it’s only temporary and he gets better soon. I would stick with the Solutabs. They are so easy, he can pop one in his mouth and let is dissolve. I don’t think he’ll put up much of a fight with those, they taste pretty decent.
February 24, 2006 at 3:43 pm #2376AnonymousInactiveSorry to hear this! I dont’ blame you for feeling a little blue. I think we all know that feeling of wantning to check something off the worry list! I pray you can check reflux off again soon
February 24, 2006 at 9:15 pm #2420AnonymousInactiveDeb, I’m sorry to hear that he needs to go back on prevacid. Kaelyn is still on solutabs. The only issue that we have is that we catch her chewing them instead of letting them dissolve.
February 24, 2006 at 11:22 pm #2433AnonymousInactiveWe had Alexis weaned at 15 months off Prilosec compounded but around 18 months or so we had to put her back on a PPI since her throat was always red and I could hear her gulping again. We started with Prevacid 15mg packets and she hated the taste, she would take it but would always make a face. We switched her to the Prevacid capsules, I just open one and sprinkle it on a spoonful of applesauce and she takes it just fine. She is still on the Prevacid now, but I do miss some days since she has been so sick I feel bad for giving her so many medications, she seems to do fine without it but I am going to continue to give it to her until she gets her 2 year molars in since that is when she refluxes the worse.
February 25, 2006 at 2:08 am #2439AnonymousInactiveI am sorry to hear this. I would go with solutabs. Ashtyn was also weaned at about 9-10 months & then had to go back on Prevacid 6 months later. Now at almost 28 months old, she is still on Prevacid. She has had every test imaginable & she has no physical reason anatomically why she refluxes. She has had metabolic workups, allergy testing & nothing. WHen on meds, she is the happiest girl & you would never know she had reflux. WHen off of it….you can tell. The last time we tried to wean her, she did okay for 2-3 days but on day 4 she was up in the middle of the night fir 7 1/2 straight hours. She wasn’t crying the whole time but uncomfortable enough that she couldn’t lay down or even sleep at an angle. The bad thing was that I was having problems with my reflux that night as well so I was awake anyway.
I used to get so upset that she may be on Prevacid for a long time but then I accepted the fact that this med makes my dd feel good & she eats, etc, etc.
February 25, 2006 at 9:31 pm #2498AnonymousInactiveI do think it’s a big deal. It would be harder to put your son back on medication after you had thought he was better tahn if he had never gone off of it. What a let down. You thought the nightmare was over and it is not. I am so sorry.
March 2, 2006 at 1:57 pm #2863AnonymousInactiveI was told my son would have reflux the rest of his life. My son also has/had the malacias. I think a “better safe than sorry” approach works best with this case. Acid errosion of the esophagus is a horrible thing, and without your child being able to tell you if he’s refluxing or not – why risk it? The meds only do good. I understand your concern, but I think this is a step backwards at all. You may have just “jumped the gun” so to speak. My son has been on the Solu-tabs since he was 9 months old. Beware that your son doesn’t chew them, because the medicine will release in his mouth and not in his stomach where it’s supposed to. I also highly recommend the Prevacid in the am/ Pepcid AC in the evening. The PPI/H2 Blocker combo works really well for my son. Once he added the H2 Blocker in the PM, he actually sleeps through the night (maybe waking once, insted of 5 times). I also don’t hear him refluxing anymore while reading him bedtime stories. Even if your son has reflux the rest of his life, it could be SOOOO much worse. Don’t beat yourself up.
