Breastfeeing mommas, what do you eat?

My ds is a year old. We just went to the GI Dr. and he thinks it might be a allergy. So he wants us to avoid dairy, soy, peanuts and if nothing changes in 3 weeks we will eliminate wheat too. We have already been off of dairy for 5 weeks, but we have substituted with soy. Now I don’t know what to substitute that with.
I am very new to all of this…
-My question is what are the best substitutes you have found? We are getting ready to go out of town for a week and I have no idea what to eat on the road (fast food) and while at other peoples homes. Any suggestions?
-Do you bring your own food?

I still bring food with us even though cooper doesn’t really have any allergies that we know of. He just doesn’t do well with chicken so I usually bring his food with us when we eat out b/c i never know what the kids menu will have. Milk wise you can do rice milk, almond milk, potato milk and hemp milk.. I am sure some other moms will chime in as well.

Are you talking about for you since you’re nursing ds? Right now I’m only eating potatoes, pears, some veg & salad (w/ vin & oil) & I am able to find things to eat @ almost every fast food & sit down restaurant. You just have to check out the websites beforehand & look @ their allergen info. Example: McDonald’s uses something in/on their fries that is a milk product. As far as eating @ other ppl’s homes I usually eat right before we go & then see if there’s anything there I can eat. But I’m sure you could take your own food (I do this @ inlaws house).

Rice milk is a good substitute & it tastes good too (I think).

I substitute with rice milk and I like it more than soy milk. I eat lots of fruits, veggies, meat, and bagels

Yes, I nurse ds so I have to change my diet as well. I’m trying to get as much info before I go shopping as I can so I’m not
reading labels for 3 hours with a screaming baby on my hip, lol!

Smart Balance Light margarine and Fleischmann’s Light margarine are OK (you still should double check the label, of course).

Bread is hard to find sometimes as it almost always seems that soy flour or protein is tucked into every ingredient list. Some people have better success with bread from the bakery dept of the store rather than off the shelf.

Meat shouldn’t be a problem unless it prepared with other ingredients. If you are eating out, be careful to identify that you don’t want your meat basted with butter and that you want it cooked in separate pan unless they absolutely don’t use butter on the grill. The same would be true for when ordering eggs (clean pan, no butter, no added milk in scrambled, etc.)

For your vacation, a lot of the fast food chains have lists like this:

We usually do not eat fast food, like Beth, I cannot trust what is in the food or what it is cooked in BUT in a pinch I’ve had to resort to fast food. For Landen who cannot have milk/soy, I will order chicken selects. They only contain wheat.

I also know that their snack wrap is a chicken select wrapped in a flour tortilla and the tortilla itself only contains wheat. If you ordered it plain it would be another option. When/If you cut out wheat, you might check out the gulten/casien free ideas that the TACA website has for kids. There are some fast food ideas on there as well and I have used that as a guide sometimes.
