BPA-free Bottles – maybe not…

We used Dr. Brown’s “BPA-free” bottles for ages, but it looks like they really weren’t BPA-free, according to the link below.

Now, I LOVE the glass Born Free bottles – can’t get safer than glass. And now that Paige is older, I’ve taken the tops off of Born Free sippy cups and use them on her glass bottles to make a very safe sippy. And the transition was so easy for her, as she was already familiar with the bottle.

And it also looks like SIGG water bottles had a liner that contained BPA until very recently:

For a safe water bottle, I like the Klean Kanteen stainless steel bottles. They also make a stainless steel sippy as well. No liner, no BPA or toxic chemicals.

we use the plastic born free bottles.. are those still considered safe?

I think the Born Free BPA-free bottles were one of the safest ones they tested. Here’s what the study said about Born Free:

“There were no detectable levels found in the BornFree and Thinkbaby bottles after 238 hours. The Green to Grow brand was not analyzed at the 238-hour mark after Health Canada found no detectable levels after 94 hours.

Thinkbaby bottles showed no detectable levels after two hours, 22 hours and 94 hours, while BornFree showed minute traces at the two-hour mark, but came up completely clean after that.”

The strange thing is: Who puts their bottles into 60C heat for over 230 hours?!!! I love these studies!… while I’m thankful that someone’s doing the research to protect our babies, I’d prefer to know what the levels were under normal use, such as the typical temp of a dishwasher after 15 runs, or when the bottle is scratched, or when microwaved. Few people use the bottles as tested, so it makes me wonder how that info transfers. Also makes me wonder what kind of chemical will come to the forefront a few years from now in the BPA free bottles. It’s probably safest to do glass! I wish they were around when my kids were babies.
