Claire is 4 and nearing the 40 lb. mark and her current seat only fits up to 40 lbs. so we are looking for a good booster. Any suggestions? Should I look for one with the back, one that can transition to just the seat, etc.?
Cosco Apex, if you have headrests in the back; it needs tall seatbacks or flat adjustable headrests. It harnesses to 65lbs, has 17-1/2″ top harness slots, and boosters from 40-100lbs. It requires a tall vehicle seat back behind it though – outgrown by height once the tips of the childs ears go past the top of the vehicle seatback/headrest. becomes a decent booster.
The head injury rates for kids in boosters drop after about age 5…from 2-4 they are way higher than for harnessed kids…so expect to try to keep her harnessed to 5-6 at a minimum (the common knowledge weight is 4 and 40, but that’s still a lowball estimate for the general public who’re still using boosters at 2).
I got a britax regent (http://www.car-seat.org/showthread.php?t=5958)for jonah (he’s 4 & 1/2 and 40lbs- he still fits in the marathon in my car- this is for dh’s minivan, as he’s outgrown the graco cargo that he’s been in)
