so i went to the ped today and got DS increased on his Prevacid from 1/2 a 15mg once a day to twice a day.
Got home and he had blood streaks in his BF mustard poop.Called the nurse, she said it could be from straining and to watch it…..I’ve also been on TED for 3-4 days, so what is going on??I should have asked to speak to the md I guess…January 18, 2008 at 5:02 pm #47456hellbenntKeymasterbrighter red could be a tiny fissure, from more ‘lower’ in the digestive track, like right around the anus
darker red, even brown, looking like coffee grounds in the diaper, is from higher up in the digestive track…if it IS blood & it’s not from a fissure:There’s an article at Dr Jack Newman’s site about the use of Pancrease
(digestive enzymes) to resolve blood in the stools.info here

January 18, 2008 at 8:57 pm #47472AnonymousInactiveSo pancrease is probably a prescription?
I listened to the voice mail from my pedi again…….she says MSPI is very rare, don’t think she’ll be too supportive. Also said, IF that’s the case would rec cutting dairy, but don’t want you to do something that drastic unless it happens frequently!January 18, 2008 at 9:22 pm #47475hellbenntKeymasterI don’t knwo about pancrease, but you can have his stool tested next week to see if there’s any blood in it…
as for MSPI- you’re already addressing this via doing the TED…why are you doing the TED? please forgive me if you’ve already posted aobut thisbut above you say he has bf mustard poop…I mean I did the TED & my baby’s bf poop was ‘normal’ –I did it to rule everything out & to feel/know that I was doing all I could…so maybe that’s why you’re doing it?anyway, I would make an appt w/ a ped GI, ASAP…~lauraJanuary 19, 2008 at 6:52 am #47484AnonymousInactiveI’m doing the TED because I’m at wit’s end. DS was started on prevacid, and a week later nothing seemed to help, and waking at night was worsening. He also has had occasional green mucus stools. I had previously tried dairy elimination, and it didn’t help the crying much.
Wasn’t sure whether to see gastro or allergist if it’s most likely an intolerance.
January 19, 2008 at 8:30 am #47488hellbenntKeymasterI hear you!
well, the prevacid can take up to 14 days to show it’s full effect. until then, if baby isn’t on anything else (like zantac, axid, tagament, pepcid) then it’s as though s/he isn’t on anything at all!1)what day of prevacid is it for your baby?2) what DOSE is it? http://www.marci-kids.com is where you’ll find up to date dosing3) what FORM of prevacid is it? if it’s compounded, chances are that it is not compounded ‘properly.’ this is a MAJOR pain in the neck!!!if it’s the solutabs then it has to be given on an empty stomach follwed by a meal 30 minutes later4) could you put this in your signature? it’s so hard to keep track of all these GERDlings- go to the top of the page to ‘settings’ and then to ‘edit profile’ and then add it to your signature5) some mucous is absolutely normal. having some green diapers is normal, too…However, I TOTALLY understand being at your wits end!! I’ve been there! I did the TED bcse that’s where I was, too!6)waking at night might be do to being unmedicated/medication wearing off? if prevacid dose isn’t high enough or isn’t compounded properly or isn’t given on an empty stomach followed by a meal 30minutes later, etc…hang in there! you’ll get this sorted out!ps: just read that baby is taking 15mgs per day. ok so it might take a day or two for the new dose to take affect…not sure how much baby weighs, but it still might not be enough- every little mg counts…I found this w/ my son- there was a period of time (pretty much where you are- when I was desperate & did the TED) he had to have his dose adjusted w/ every little weight gain. I would ask for some zantac or pepcid to help with the ‘breakthrough’ acid…this might be the link I was thinking of/ Zantac & PPIs/dr.Philips:https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=546&KW=dr+philips&PN=0&TPN=1hellbennt2008-01-19 08:34:44
January 19, 2008 at 8:46 am #47491AnonymousInactiveMy pediatrician was going to go to Zantac INSTEAD of prevacid, so I took the increase in Prevacid. Do Mylanta at times if he’s too fussy to eat. Yesterday was pretty much 2 weeks on the prevacid, and prior to that for a few days had started doing twice a day on my own. She now also says if I do give him a whole tab it’s no biggie (mostly because he spits out meds pretty good)
January 19, 2008 at 8:54 am #47493hellbenntKeymasterso you can give a whole tab 2x a day? go for it!!!
or try 1/2 a tab 3x a day
‘play’ w/ the doses & times given & see if it helpsJanuary 30, 2008 at 4:25 pm #47823AnonymousInactiveHi, I have read a lot of your posts within the last couple of months and figured I’d fill you in on my situation and ask you a of couple of questions.
First of all my baby is about 4 1/2 months old now and has been on prevacid since about 1 month of age. We began having problems with her our last night in the hospital before coming home. Being first time parents we had no clue what we were in for! So anyway- she has been on prevacid for quite a while now and her dosage has been increased three times. She is now on 3.0 ml two times a day and this is a suspension so I’m not really sure how to rate this with other dosages. Her reflux is not so much the huge spit-ups but the pain and screaming. This has gotten a lot better and I cut out dairy for the past 2 1/2 months also. This seemed to help. Then all of a sudden the screams came back this started about 5 weeks ago right around Christmas (after we had tried taking her off the prevacid perfect 5 days then a huge mistake!!!!!!) Sooo- after going to the doctor with her screaming the entire time and numerous times having her meds increased, having an ear infection and some type of bacterial infection…things were finally straightening out again and wham! The worst week in a long time. So we went back to the doctor and he basically told us he’d seen a hundred cases and we just need to stick it out that she was on a good dose of medicine. So we left very frustrated and I came home and got on the internet to see if there was any other direction that i could go with this. This is when I found your post about the elimination diet. I started this last sunday and with in two days it was like I had a whole new baby… I did order the book but do not have it here yet but I ended up adding my first new food last night because my milk supply was getting a little low and I thought I prob needed something with a little more calories so I went with the avacados. Anyway, this is where I am stuck…do I continue to add avacado to my diet each day for four days and then add something new if there aren’t any problems??? And what do I do when I find a food that I suspect is a problem? Do I then have to start over with the first 2 weeks of the diet? I thought it was really ironic that you said that your little one was affected by tuna- every time I ate a tuna sub from subway it was followed by a fussy morning so I actually cut the tuna out a long time ago but figured I was probably crazy for doing it because I’d never heard of a baby affected by it Also if you have any advice on getting her to sleep better at night I’d love to hear it. She usually can go for about 3 hour stretches at night but this is with her in a co-sleeper and me next to her constantly holding her arms down when she wakes up grunting and hitting herself in the face… We tried cereal and this didn’t seem to work at all!!Thanks for any help you can give!!January 30, 2008 at 7:54 pm #47835hellbenntKeymasterShe is now on 3.0 ml two times a day and this is a suspension so I’m not really sure how to rate this with other dosages.
first of all, chances are that the medication is not being made properly. you have to SMILE & ask the pharmacist to please humour you & then tell her/him exactly how you want the compound to be made- from ‘groupie intro’ there’s ‘prevacid 101’ where there’s a link as to how to ask for your compound to be made & also here is: compounding from lori: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=7855&TPN=1next: to check the dose, look at the bottle it will tell you ___mgs/ml. again, the links to how to get it compounded will explain how many mgs per ml you need to have it be effective, etc.http://www.marci-kids.com will also help you with the dose (once you know the dose in mgs, and then read how to ask for it compounded, you will get a better idea of how many mls and mgs per ml that you are looking for).I cut out dairy for the past 2 1/2 months also. This seemed to help…
glad that going no dairy has helped!
having an ear infection and some type of bacterial infection…

I started this [TED]last sunday and with in two days it was like I had a whole new baby… I did order the book but do not have it here yet but I ended up adding my first new food last night because my milk supply was getting a little low and I thought I prob needed something with a little more calories so I went with the avacados. I would think that avocados are fairy ‘safe’ and that they are an excellent fat to add. you can even buy avocado oil and cook with it as well. olive oil should be fine, too. So yes, I would add in a food at a time for four days- you could even try adding foods in this way:http://allergyadvisor.com/Educational/December_2.htm scroll down to āCā orange/mustard box-it’s the SECOND orange/mustard boxas for if you come across a problem: what I have found/have learned is that a food (proteins) takes about 3-5 hrs to make it’s way through you to your milk. so if you introduce let’s say tomato at noon and then nurse baby at 3pm and then find that soon after baby starts shrieking (this happened to me), then you can assume it’s the tomato you ate at noon. The tomato shouldn’t take a full two weeks to clear out of your system like milk or soy- just stop eating it…I think though, that ‘biggies’ like wheat or even rice can take a week or two to clear out. that’s my thought. so if you’re eating avocado and toast & see a reaction well maybe it’s the toast (wheat). I guess that’s why it’s best to add foods back in slowly…I didn’t have trouble with adding in foods, but then again I truly didn’t feel it was MSPI to begin with. for you it sounds possible, especially since you saw good results cutting out dairy & then starting the TED.I thought it was really ironic that you said that your little one was affected by tuna- every time I ate a tuna sub from subway it was followed by a fussy morning so I actually cut the tuna out a long time ago but figured I was probably crazy for doing it because I’d never heard of a baby affected by it
too funny! maybe we’re onto something here? maybe it’s tuna, maybe it’s soy somehow in how it’s processed, maybe it’s nothing, LOL! I’m tempted to say it was the actual tuna, bcse I had no problems with eating soy…
Also if you have any advice on getting her to sleep better at night I’d love to hear it. She usually can go for about 3 hour stretches at night but this is with her in a co-sleeper and me next to her constantly holding her arms down when she wakes up grunting and hitting herself in the face… We tried cereal and this didn’t seem to work at all!!
ahhhh. sleep. well, hopefully this will improve once you get the meds figured out. if you have zantac you can give this at night, just space it 4hrs seperate from the prevacid. you can also try giving pepcid complete at night. I know for a six month old you can dissolve 1/2 a tablet in some water, so for your baby maybe a bit less? do a search for pepcid complete…other thoughts: swaddle.or don’t swaddle and put baby on tummy. This is from the American Academy of Pediatrics & how they recommend that tummy sleeping is best for GERD babies. http://www.aap.org/new/sids/question.htm (thanks Sherry & Christine!)There’s a monitor that you can use called the Angel Care Monitor that many of the parents on this board have had great success with. Jonah was sent home with a monitor from the hospital, so I don’t know firsthand about the Angel Care monitor, but here’s all about it: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/search.asp?KW=angelcare&SM=2&SI=TC&FM=0&OB=2
BEANIE BABY: for day time naps I suggest this: Try putting her on her tummy & put a beanie baby on her back for 2 reasons- to see that she’s breathing (the beanie baby will go up & down )
[can’t un-underline this sorry!]& for the weight- put your hand on her back & then slowly leave it & the beanie baby is there instead…
For sleeping, there’s also the Tucker Sling that people rave about: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/search.asp?KW=tucker&S M=1&SI=TC&FM=0&OB=2 [link doesn’t work? do a search…]
as well as the Amby Hammock: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/search.asp?KW=amby&SM= 1&SI=TC&FM=0&OB=2 [link doesn’t work? do a search…]

January 31, 2008 at 9:51 am #47861AnonymousInactiveThank you so much for all the helpful information. I checked out the links and found them very useful. I am definetly going to talk with our pharmicist because ironically every time we are getting near the end of one bottle of medicine all the problems start up again and this is usually when they decide to increase her dose again. I even called one time before and said that I thought all that was left in the bottle was the flavoring and at that point she had no trouble at all taking her medicine since it tasted so good, imagine that!! They acted like I was crazy though!! Another thing I was wondering is if anyone else is going broke from paying for the prevacid. Are last bottle cost us 100 bucks since we haven’t met our deductable yet and there is no generic brand. It usually runs around 45-60 bucks but it seems like we are refilling all of the time. Are the other brands that some of you posted cheaper??
