hi.. i have a question for my sister.. i dont think her doctor knows what she is talking about.. so i told her i would check on here and get your guy’s opinions.
her baby has been great all along.. she is 2 mos old..and just started to have more explosive poo’s.. and today had streaks of blood mixed with mucous in her diaper. i told her it is most likely due to something she is eating as in dairy or soy. .. as long as it wasnt a tear from her being constipated. she said she DEF. is constipated as she goes explosions. So she called her ped.. and her ped said its doesnt sound like it could be from dairy.. and thats its prob a tear. ! but said to call back tomorrow if it happens again.anyhow.. heres my question… my sister thinks it might be nuts.. since she has been eating more nuts lately..and she herself used to be allergic to nuts.is this possible?? can this nuts be the main reason for the mucous and blood?would LOVE to know everyones opinion.thanks!!!!March 11, 2009 at 9:34 pm #61547hellbenntKeymasterquestions about the blood:
what color? is it bright red & looks like blood? to me that’s a tear or it’s
from irritation lower down in the GI tract (not that I know anything, lol)
is it dark brown like coffee grounds? that’s ‘old’ blood and from higher up in the GI tract…
is she SURE it’s blood? has it been tested by hemmocult (sp?)as for the nuts: sure, why not? they’re a protein…the way to find out is to cut them out completely for a good 2 or 3 weeks…it may or not be nuts or any other protein like milk or soy, etc…as for constipations, etc:exlosive blow-out poops are NORMAL for breastfed babies- we called it poop up the back blow-outs…it may not be CONSTIPATION…http://www.kellymom.com is an AMAZING resource for breastfeeding moms/babies and there’s an answer there for EVERYTHINGhttp://www.askdrsears.com is also amazing, as you know…I often get links from there when mamas post that their babies have diarrhea (it’s usually NOT diarhea but loose stools…that’s why I’m saying to look into the definition of what’s going on w/ her baby’s stools…)as for mucous: SOME is fine. just not all.the.time.some GREEN is NORMAL, too…from above links she can research breastfed baby poop, LOL!March 11, 2009 at 11:47 pm #61553AnonymousInactiveI agree w/ everything Laura said…
Breastfed babies are not usually constipated… & they definitely aren’t constipated if the stool is still loose (as it should be). She may THINK she is constipated b/c of straining, squirming, etc but that is most likely due to an intolerance which=intestinal pain.
I would be more inclined to think that if it’s blood+mucous (consistently) then it’s an intolerance issue. Evan had major intolerances as well as an anal tear (diff’t times) & I’ll be honest – the blood looked very diff’t as Laura mentioned (bright red=tear, dark red/brown or microscopic=colon irritation).
Does her baby have any stinky gas that would indicate an intolerance?
She could certainly be intolerant to nuts but I might also explore eliminating milk & soy as well. Also, my 1st son is allergic to peanuts + tree nuts but NEVER reacted through my breastmilk whatsoever…just for what it’s worth.
