Well, it’s been a LONG time since I’ve been able to post in the Hip Hip Hooray category, but today I finally can! Paige slept through the night last night, and woke up just before 7:00 am!!! This is the first time she has done this in all of 2008! She usually wakes at least once, often twice, crying in pain then wanting to eat. I really hope that this could be the start of something good, and it’s been a very long road getting here!
We have been working so hard on her gut. Testing has shown that she has huge levels of multiple strains of bad bacteria, as well as yeast, viruses and parasites in her gut. It appears that she has next to no immune defence in her gut, so absolutely anything she comes into contact with can “set up shop”. As per doctor’s orders, we have significantly increased her doses of probiotics and added S. boulardii. I think we are now finally starting to colonize the “good” and outcrowd the “bad”. And for the first time in her life, she has had normal looking poop for the last few days! Not hard as a rock, screaming and crying to pass it, and not loose or watery! Actual formed, soft poop! And now sleep? Am I in heaven??!!September 11, 2008 at 11:49 am #56403AnonymousInactiveOh and how could I forget….. we stopped her Prevacid at the same time that we started the mega-doses of probiotics and she has had NO reflux! It’s been almost 3 weeks now!!!

question.. how does she seem to gain good weight with all those gut issues (parasites etc)?? shane is soo skinny! i have often wondered what is up with him.. where do you get the testing done?anyhow.. i am soo happy for u guys! cant believe she is off prevacid as well! when are you able to try solids again?September 11, 2008 at 3:21 pm #56421AnonymousInactiveThanks everyone – I’m just so happy today!
Leo – Paige is now taking 1/4 tsp Klaire Ther-Biotic Infant, 1/2 capsule of Kirkman’s Pro-Bio Gold, and 1/2 capsule S. boulardii each twice a day. This works out to 40+ billion CFU’s (colony forming units) per day, plus the S. boulardii. We were given the S. boulardii from Ben and Paige’s new DAN and it’s made by a little known Canadian company. I had been looking into it previously though and would likely have ordered some from either Kirkman or Klaire since they both make a hypoallergenic S. boulardii supplement.Lauren – I think the Neocate has been Paige’s saving grace in the weight gain department. Since everything in it is so easily absorbed, she gets all her nutrients, fats, etc. absorbed in the stomach and small intestine before anything passes into the large intestine, where most of her problems seem to be. Thankfully she’s been on it since she was very little so she has no problem with the taste and drinks lots of it, although it gets very expensive! Were hoping to try and add more solids in once we have her gut a little more balanced so that she has a better chance of being able to digest them. We did a comprehensive stool analysis on her which showed very high levels of bad bacteria and yeast overgrowth, and based on other symptoms our doctor believe viruses and parasites are also present (these are very hard to test for, and most tests aren’t able to accurately identify the presence of parasites). We had the stool analysis performed by Great Plains Laboratory: http://www.greatplainslaboratory.com/home/eng/stool.aspSeptember 11, 2008 at 3:23 pm #56422AnonymousInactiveThat is SUCH great news!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
