Hello all!
Owen has had 2 ear infections in the last month. The first he was on Ammoxicillin and now he is on Ominicef. I don’t know if he really got rid of the first one because about 5-7 days after we were done with the first meds, he began the poor sleep, tugging at his ears etc.My question is I have been trying to give the Omnicef at least 4 hours after his Prevacid to avoid any interaction, did any of you have success or failures with these drugs? My oldest son would need like three trials of different meds to get rid of an infection, and I simply cannot go through this again!
Last night he slept from 8:30-3:30 but then was up 3:30, 4:30, 5:30 and 6. He was not hungry, but did eat a little. He also puked twice and smelled kind of acidy so I’m wondering if he wasn’t refluxing and getting acid up in his throat and that was waking him. I gave him ibueprofen and the ear numbing drops at one of the wakings and that didn’t seem to do anything.
I’m frustrated because he takes the compounded Prevacid and my doc says he’s at the top of his doseage, but only takes 2ML twice daily which equates to only 12MG per day and I know from Marci-kids that’s not enough.
Did anyone have a specific drug that worked for ear infections with Prevacid or is it just hit and miss???

Bryce also takes the compounded Prevacid, and he was on Omnicef twice this year. It didn’t react with the Prevacid in anyway, and seemed to help his ear infections more than any other antibiotic we tried.Bryce is on 2ml 3xday (18mg). At one time it was his marci-kids dose, but we’ve never had to increase it. I hope you can find someone to increase Owen’s dose. Have you tried a family doctor? Bryce’s doc is a family doctor, and she’s the one that initially gave us his higher dose.
Good luck with those ears!

It does sound like his reflux may be bothering him. He probably needs a higher Prevacid dose. Have you checked to see that it is being prepared properly? Many times compounded Prevacid loses it’s effectiveness because it is not being compounded properly.
May 3, 2007 at 1:27 pm #32131AnonymousInactivehi erica, my son is actually on omnicef right not too.. trying to get rid of an ear infection .. we actually did the shot of antibiotic first because we wanted it to get out of his system as fast as we could..
and it went down but not completely away.. so i know how you feel.. i dont understand why it takes soooo many different tries to get rid of the stupid thing! but, i think my doctor said to give his antibiotic in the morning and prevacid at night. and the bottle on my omnicef says 2 hrs. apart. so i think your fine how you are doing it. i hope it clears it up!
May 3, 2007 at 1:52 pm #32134AnonymousInactiveWe’ve never done omnicef, but have had success with zithromax until she got the tubes.
Hope that your little ones are feeling better soon.
May 3, 2007 at 5:16 pm #32148AnonymousInactiveI didn’t realize omnicef had to be timed around Prevacid? Is that true for zegerid as well? Or is it an empty stomach thing?
We have had good luck with zithromax. We had two separate rounds of amoxicillian, which worked but caused diarrhea, then we tried omnicef once and it did nothing, and have used zithromax successfully ever since. I feel like Sarah is becoming the ear infection queen so I definitely know how stressful it can be.
Hope he feels better soon!
May 3, 2007 at 10:17 pm #32162AnonymousInactivesomeone told me that amoxicillin was about as efffective as water.
good luck, i hope you can get the marci-kids dose for him soon.
May 3, 2007 at 10:46 pm #32164AnonymousInactiveIt’s weird how everybody responds so differently to different antibiotics. Most people (myself included) seem to respond really well to Zithromax, but Bryce was having 103° fevers the whole time he was on it and beyond; however, the day he started Omnicef it cleared right up. My other boys always do really well with good ol’ amoxicillin.

Justice recently had an ear infection and we gave him the hylands ear tablets and he felt so much better. The tablets would wear off in four hours so we would have to give another dose. I called the chiro and made an appt. and she adjusted him and poof it was gone. You can actually help him by pulling down on his ear lobs. You grab the lower part of his ears and pull down toward his neck. Not straight down, but towards his neck. Sometimes they don’t like it so you may have to get some help, but it helps to release pressure or fluid or something. Also, I never worried about getting permission to increase or decrease meds. I would just increase it a few ml or e-mail Dr. Phillips and ask him how much to increase it. He told me once that when a child is teething the dose should be increased. Good luck. I hope it gets better soon.
Not to steal your post, but has anyone else been having problems getting e-mails that someone has replied to a post?
