Jadon has been on his Pepcid for 1 week and the first 3-4 days were great….now its like hes back to square one with the cryaing and fussing. The doc told me I can up his Pepcid to 3x a day instead of 2x a day. Can they get used to the meds that quick????

My daughter was on Zantac, an H2 Blocker similar to Pepcid, and she did well the first week. Then we upped her dose and she did well again for a week. Then is was downhill for months. She just never got long lasting relief from Zantac.

Yes, babies can develop a tolerance to H2 Blockers in only a week’s time. (I read about this at marci-kids.com, and experienced with my own child).

My son also has reflux and I knew to not try Zantac again. I asked for a PPI and his doctor put him on Prevacid. Once we got his dose right he turned around and has been fine since.

Does Jadon have reflux? Do you have feeding difficulties with him? How is his sleep?

Hi Georgann,

Zantac didn’t work for Tess either. For us it wasn’t so much that she would get worse it’s just that she would be stuck in this middle-ground – better than unmedicated but not really great. It didn’t matter how much we upped her dosage she would just never improve beyond a certain point with the Zantac. We moved on to Prilosec and it worked SO much better. I’d definitely ask your doc about a PPI.

Zantac did nothing for us, either. If you don’t see an improvement after upping it to three times daily, then I would ask for a PPI. Our ped told us that if the zantac is working you should see an improvement after 3-4 days (not 2 weeks like with a PPI). If he doesn’t start doing better it may be something to consider. Good luck.
